Chris Klafford burst onto the “America’s Got Talent” scene in a big way last month with his viral audition of “Imagine.” Unfortunately, the Swedish singer returned to perform live during Tuesday’s Quarterfinals 2 episode and received mixed reviews from the panel of judges. His original song “Cold at the Altar” didn’t give Simon Cowell the same “emotional connection” as his previous performances, while all Howie Mandel could praise was Chris’ “amazing hair.” Will America vote this act through to the Season 14 Semifinals? Watch the “AGT” performance video above, read the judges’ comments below and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results episode.
Julianne Hough: “Chris, welcome back. I gotta be honest, the first bit I was thinking, ‘Okay, maybe the next time if he gets through we should put a band on there or something like that,’ and then something just happened. You just took over and you owned the stage. You don’t need a band. You are special. That was unbelievable. Wow.”
Simon Cowell: “Chris, you know what? You’re a great guy, you’re a great singer. I didn’t feel the emotional connection on that song I felt the time before. That second song which Chris did in the middle rounds I thought was exceptional. I didn’t feel that emotional connection, but your voice is great. You can tell people disagree with me, which is great. We’ll see what happens. Going forward I would love to hear that middle song back again.”
Gabrielle Union: “I looked over at Julianne and she had goosebumps. That says everything. You had the audience in the palm of your hand. I wasn’t even familiar with the song but I teared up by the end. Chris, you’re a special talent and I think America is gonna vote for you.”
Howie Mandel: “You know, I’m on the Simon side with this and the thing about it is, I think it’s the same thing as with Charlotte. I think you’re an amazing talent with an amazing voice. That song choice? Two out of four of us agreed. But you have amazing hair, and I know hair.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the live performance: “Chris Klafford came to the stage for a heartfelt performance with nothing but his guitar and his stunning voice. Julianne and Gabrielle were on their feet for an ovation, welcoming him back with enthusiastic praise. While the women were clearly team Chris, Simon and Howie did not feel the emotional connection to the song. So on this one the judges were split, adding to the perception that tonight was not off to a great start for the acts.”
