Could it be? Is airport drama finally back on “The Amazing Race”? Why, yes! Not gonna lie, I had to rewatch the sneak peek above twice just to make sure my eyes aren’t deceiving me. But Wednesday’s episode will have some flight predicaments before Leg 9 even starts for Nicole Franzel and Victor Arroyo.
Once a hallmark of the early seasons of “Race,” when teams had to scurry, haggle and fight tooth and nail to nab the best flight to their next destination, airport drama has all but vanished in recent seasons (or at the very least hasn’t been shown), thanks to the show making sure teams are on the flights they need to be on.
Not totally the case this week. The remaining six teams are off to Split, Croatia, but there are only so many flights from Switzerland and so many open ticket counters. In the sneak peek, Team Fun, Becca Droz and Floyd Pierce, have apparently cut in front of Nicole and Victor in line. “They’re just gonna hop in right there. There’s nothing we can do. They’re right there,” he grumbles to Nic. (Maybe they should’ve done the Reillys sisters’ bidding and targeted Team Fun? Hindsight’s funny.)
After the Afghanimals, Leo Temory and Jamal Zadran, purchase their tickets in the next line, Nic and Vic try to get the same ones, but the ticket agent is done with her shift after the Afghanimals and immediately walks away (gurl, I get it), leaving Vicole high and dry. “It’s frustrating when people cut,” Nicole laments with Team Fun in earshot.
“No, no, no. There were two lines being formed for two different ticket agents,” Becca counters in a talking head.
Team Fun’s agent points Nic and Vic to another counter, but they’re told all the early flights are booked.
This would be super suspenseful if we don’t already know that Nicole and Victor make it to Croatia. Not to mention the fact that another preview reveals another travel twist: Team Fun and the Afghanimals’ flight, which also carries Colin Guinn and Christie Woods, was delayed for one hour. So chances are, Nicole and Victor were forced to book a later flight that left on time, so they could’ve been the first to arrive in Croatia. But there was probably an equalizer anyway waiting for all of them there.
“The Amazing Race” airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on CBS.
