Can ‘The Amazing Race’ take back its Emmy title for the first time since 2014?

For a while there was no stopping “The Amazing Race” at the Emmys. It just kept winning and winning and winning — and you could tack on another seven “winnings” to that because it claimed Best Competition Program 10 times (2003-2009, 2011-2012, 2014). But the globetrotting show hasn’t won in five years. Has the TV academy moved on for good, or is there still room for it to cross the finish line first? It has never not been nominated since Best Competition Program was established in 2003, so we know there’s still goodwill for the international contest.

And one of the Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets is predicting an “Amazing” comeback. As of this writing Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly) says it’s the front-runner, just ahead of “The Masked Singer” and “The Voice.” The defending champ, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” actually ranks fourth in her forecasts, with “American Ninja Warrior” and “Top Chef” rounding out her six picks for the category. That’s subject to change of course. We Emmy prognosticators will be tinkering with our predictions until nominations are announced on July 16, and then we’ll tinker some more when trying to pick the winners.

“The Amazing Race” does have one key advantage this year: it finished airing its season on June 26, not long after voting for nominations had concluded, so it would have been especially fresh in mind for voters. And if it’s nominated for a 17th time like we’re expecting, it’ll still be pretty fresh in mind when it comes time to choose the winners later this summer. “RuPaul’s” is still our front-runner when you combine all predictions from all of our users, but we’ve definitely got a race on our hands. It’s just a matter of whether that race will be “Amazing” or a “Drag.”
