Olivia Colman is red-hot following her surprise Oscar win for “The Favourite.” She headlines season 3 of “The Crown,” which will start streaming on Netflix on Nov. 17. That is just three days after the SAG Awards nomination ballots go live.
Colman lost to Glenn Close (“The Wife”) on the movie side at January’s SAG Awards. However, she is the clear frontrunner at the upcoming ceremony for her portrayal of a middle-aged Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown.” Remember, that part already proved a winner for Claire Foy, who won the SAG Award for both her turns as the young Elizabeth.
Colman won the Best Actress Oscar for playing one of the reigning monarch’s ancestors, Queen Anne, in “The Favourite. In season three of “The Crown,” Colman takes over from Foy as the action moves forward to the late 1960s and 1970s. As you can see from the teaser trailer video above, she looks remarkably like the Queen, right down to her imperious stare.
Replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip is “Outlander” star Tobias Menzies. Helena Bonham Carter reaped an Oscar bid for portraying the Queen’s mother in “The King’s Speech” and now takes on the role of the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret. It is the juiciest of parts as the timeline from 1964 to 1977 will include the break-up of her marriage to Anthony Armstrong-Jones (Ben Daniels). This new cast is signed for two seasons, which are being filmed concurrently.
