“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is about to get one of the few awards missing from its trophy case. The reigning Emmy champ is the odds-on favorite to take home comedy ensemble at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
“Maisel” is lightyears ahead of No. 2 “GLOW,” with 16/5 odds to 4/1. The SAG Awards was the only major group to snub “Maisel” last year for its debut season, which basically swept everything else, including earning eight Emmy Awards. It’s not unusual for the SAG Awards to bypass first-year shows and then have to play catch-up since it votes early and its members are creatures of habit who love repeat champs. “Homeland” and “Transparent” were also SAG-snubbed for their Emmy-winning freshman installments.
With a leading four nominations, “Maisel” looks strong to grab at least two, in this category and comedy actress for Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan, who has now won back-to-back Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. It also helps that reigning ensemble champ “Veep” is ineligible, so there’s no chance of a title defense. Plus, three-time champ “Orange Is the New Black” was finally dropped, which means voters can’t go back to an old favorite.
Outside of returning contender “GLOW,” none of the other casts have been nominated before. Globe champ “The Kominsky Method,” which is in third place, and “Barry,” in fourth place, are new shows, while fifth-place “Atlanta” broke in for the first time for its second season. Like its FX brethren “The Americans” on the drama side, “Atlanta” is the only nominee not to have an individual acting bid.
