‘The Masked Singer’ episode 9 recap: Was Flamingo, Flower, Leopard or Rottweiler eliminated on November 20? [UPDATING LIVE BLOG]

With only eight costumed characters still in the running to win Season 2 of “The Masked Singer,” four took the stage on Wednesday (Flamingo, Flower, Leopard, Rottweiler) with the other four set to perform next week (Butterly, Fox, Thingamajig, Tree). Panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke were joined this week by special guest judge Joel McHale, who helped try to guess the celebs’ true identities in this wild and wacky reality TV show. By the end of the hour, one singer was forced to unmask in front of America.

8:00 p.m. — “Previously on ‘The Masked Singer’!” In the eighth episode, Ladybug lost the audience vote after her performance of “Youngblood” and removed her mask to reveal Kelly Osbourne. “I hate being anonymous,” said the singer-songwriter, fashion designer and television host in her post-show interview. None of the panelists correctly guessed Ladybug’s true identity, so here’s hoping they have their thinking caps on this week. Who will be the ninth contestant eliminated tonight?

8:10 p.m. — We’re kicking things off tonight with a face-off between the Flamingo and the Leopard. Flamingo has overcome her nerves and things are starting to click. We see images of the Eiffel Tower while the Flamingo sits poolside and says this experience is teaching her to love her own voice for the first time in years. We also see some references to Mexican culture thrown in as well. For her performance, Flamingo is taking on “Lady Marmalade” by Patti LaBelle. This is a huge song and Flamingo has the pipes to pull it off. She’s strutting around the stage with a quartet of backup dancers dressed in drag. This is a true song and dance performance and Flamingo has the crowd going wild. The panel believes Flamingo could be Adrienne Bailon, Bella Thorne, Jillian Michaels or Fantasia. Most of us Derbyites seem to agree with Jenny and her guess of Adrienne Bailon.

8:20 p.m. — It’s time for the Leopard to sink his teeth into his next performance in hopes of taking down Flamingo. Leopard never imagined how liberating this competition would be for him. When he was a teenager he set himself free for the first time and since then he’s treated the world like his own personal catwalk. We also saw an image of a flag and a baseball bat while Leopard walked a red carpet. Interesting. For his performance Leopard is singing “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire. He’s sticking with his elegant persona but this vocal is a bit subdued for a competition. It’s fun but I think Flamingo is going to take this one. The panel thinks Leopard could be Jamie Foxx, Donald Glover, Seal or Alec Baldwin. I agree with Nicole on this one and her guess that Leopard is Seal.

8:25 p.m. — The votes are in and the winner of tonight’s first face-off is Flamingo! Leopard still has a chance to keep his mask on when he sings again in tonight’s smack down.

8:30 p.m. — The next face-off pits the Rottweiler against the Flower. Flower is up first and she says it’s been tough to impress everyone while trying to conceal her identity. We get some clues that she has a perfume line and we see images of dominoes game pieces while she mentions the Rolling Stones. Tonight Flower is singing “Alone” by Heart. It’s pretty obvious that Flower is Patti LaBelle and it seems like she’s stopped caring about concealing her identity and she’s letting that voice blow like only she can. This legendary voice is just too easily identifiable to hide and I’m glad she’s finally letting it rip! Guesses from the panel include Patti, Barbra Streisand and Bjork. We all know it’s Patti!

8:40 p.m. — Next up is Rottweiler who calls this experience the most fun he’s had in as long as he can remember. The truth is that he’s terrified about the panel finding out his true identity and judging him because of it. We see images of platinum records and awards. Tonight he’s singing “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. This song is a tall order vocally and Rottweiler is nailing it so he’s definitely a performer with serious chops! This is great and will probably give him the edge over Flower. The panel threw out guesses like Gavin Rossdale, Billy Joe Armstrong, Mario Lopez and Darren Criss. Us Derbyites are pretty convinced Rottweiler is actually Chris Daughtry.

8:45 p.m. — The votes have been counted and the winner of the second face-off is the Rottweiler! That means Flower will battle it out in a smack down with Leopard to remain masked.

8:50 p.m. — Leopard is up first singing “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls. The Leopard is clearly a showman but hasn’t really showed off his vocal range with his performances. Up next Flower sings “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor and she’s not playing anymore games. She picked the right song about fighting to stay alive while Leopard swings his hips along to her performance. This could be close!

8:55 p.m. — The final votes have been counted and the winner of tonight’s smack down is Leopard! He fights to sing another day while Flower will be unmasked.

8:59 p.m. — It’s now time to find out who Flower is once and for all. For their final guesses Nicole, Robyn and Jenny pick Patti, Ken holds firm with Bjork and Joel says Dionne Warwick. Finally the Flower reveals herself to be Patti LaBelle! That’s a wrap for tonight.
