Episode 4 of “The Masked Singer” brought back the five celebrities from week 2 who had survived the audience vote. Among these was the Rabbit. We had thought that based on his first performance and the set of clues he provided that it was Joey Fatone of the boy band NSYNC. Since we broke that news, he has issued a denial.
So who is hiding behind that bunny costume? Take a look at his take on Avicii‘s “Wake Me Up” in the video above and then scroll down for a spoiler as to his true identity.
Forget those red herrings in week 2 by judges Nicole Scherzinger and Ken Jeong that the Rabbit is not a professional singer. We are all but certain that the Rabbit is Fatone’s one-time band mate, JC Chasez.
Let’s break down the clues the Rabbit gave before singing:
“During my last performance (“Livin’ la Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin) I bounced to new heights. I knew I would thrive behind this mask and I knocked it out of the amusement park.” NSYNC got their start performing in theme parks in Orlando, Florida.
“As a young cottontail I sought fame and everyone wanted a piece of me, but life isn’t always carrots and cream. I found safety in a group.” This points the way to the Rabbit having once been part of a band once but that he is now a solo act.
In week 2 he said, “I’ve spent most of my life on stage, but I was never alone” and “synchronized singing was my forte” – JC was part of the boy band from 1995 to 2002.
“Now, I pop up here, and I pop up there” – Since the group split, JC has carved out a career as a solo artist, songwriter, producer and was a judge on MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” for seven seasons.
Before performing, the Rabbit declared that “the last man standing, it’s gonna be me.” Remember, “It’s Gonna Be Me” was the only #1 for NSYNC. This track from their second studio album “No Strings Attached” reached the top of the charts in 2000.
We won’t find out for sure if JC is the Rabbit till he is unmasked. That will only happen if he loses a match-up or wins the show. Do you think we are right about the true identity of the Rabbit? Sound off in the comments section with your best guesses.
