The second episode of “The Masked Singer” on Wednesday (Jan. 9), featured another half dozen celebrities. Each of them was completely hidden inside an animal costume with their faces covered by an elaborate mask. They were paired up and the loser of each sing-off was at risk of being eliminated. Of the three also-rans, it was the Pineapple who was sent packing. Before leaving the stage, he was unmasked and revealed to be comedian Tommy Chong.
We’ve already posted our theories as to who the winners of both his sing-off — the Raven — and the other two — the Rabbit and the Bee — really are. Now we turn to the first of the two acts that lost their sing-off but won the right to sing again: the Alien.
She performed in the first of the three match-ups against the Rabbit and had the whole crowd rocking to “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man (Watch her uplifting performance in the video above.) So, who is this hidden talent?
Forget that wild speculation by judge Robin Thicke that it could be model Bella Hadid or that red herring from Nicole Scherzinger that the Alien costume reminded her of one worn by Britney Spears.
We are all but certain that the Alien is La Toya Jackson.
Let’s break down the clues she gave before singing:
“In my family, anonymity is a completely alien concept” – the Jackson clan has been famous for more than half a century.
“Growing up in the public’s eye, my life was never really my own” – patriarch Joe Jackson ruled his family with an iron fist for decades.
“I let others define me but no one will ever control me again” – La Toya had a contentious eight-year marriage to her manager Jack Gordon that ended in divorce in 1997.
Nicole was spot on when she observed that this was not a professional singer. Try as she might but La Toya never equalled the success of her siblings. She has releases nine albums, none of which broke the Billboard 100.
We won’t find out for sure if LaToya is the Alien till she is unmasked. That will only happen if she loses the audience vote or wins the show. Do you think we are right about the true identity of the Alien? Sound off in the comments section with your best guesses.
