“The Masked Singer” has already reached the halfway point of season 2. On the November 13 episode, five celebrities sang for the four judges (Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke). They were disguised as the Flower, Fox, Ladybug, Rottweiler and Tree. At the end of the show one of this quintet was eliminated, becoming the eighth cast-off to date.
The strongest singer among these competitors is the Flower. We’ve been wowed by her performances to date, including her rollicking cover of the Dolly Parton tune “9 to 5” in week 3 and her soaring version of “Cheap Thrills” by Sia in week 5. We’ve watched these repeatedly as well as the clues videos and are convinced we know the name of the famous face hidden inside the Flower mask. The Flower is the Grammy-winning singer Patti LaBelle. Don’t agree? Consider the following:
Patti has won two of her 13 Grammy bids (As a group, “The Masked Singer” contenders have taken home 10 Grammys from 42 nominations).
In the Flower clues video, there is a reference to “Empire”; Patti appeared on the season 1 finale of this FOX hit in 2015. In addition we see the number “314,” which could also be written as 3.14 (the start of pi); Patti sells her sweet potato pies at Walmart.
There is shot of a honorary doctorate from Temple University in Philadelphia. Patti was honored by her hometown school in 2010. And there is a photo of Philly cheesesteak sandwich.
The Flower declares, “I blossom in every field I plant myself in and I am here to branch out yet again.” While Patti is known primarily as a singer, she has enjoyed success as an actress and is the author of a series of best-selling cookbooks.
The Flower admits, “I’m going to put my petals to the metal and make the other singers wilt.” That certainly encapsulates Patti’s stage presence.
