“The Masked Singer” on FOX has turned into must-see-TV this winter because of its fascinating concept: stars wearing elaborate costumes sing songs in the hope of winning over the judging panel and studio audience in order that they can stay in the competition. On Wednesday’s second episode, six celebrities sang in pairs and five of them made the cut. The second famous face forced to unmask was comedian Tommy Chong, who had been dressed as a Pineapple.
He lost his match-up against the Raven who had wowed the crowd with her rendition of “Rainbow” by Kesha. Watch her show-stopping turn in the video above.
Before taking to the stage, the Raven offered up several clues as to her identity. She revealed that she had spent her life listening to other people’s stories and readily admitted “that no one talks more than me.” She wanted to do the show to “honor my beloved” who had recently passed away. And she decided to dress as a raven because she hopes to “find beauty in the darkness.”
All these clues point to the Raven being Ricki Lake. Her ex-husband, Christian Evans, died in 2017. And when questioned by judge Jenny McCarthy, the Raven admitted she had hosted a talk show. Lake has done just that twice.
She made TV history back in 1994 when, at age 24, she became the youngest person to ever have their own talk show. That self-titled talker ran for 11 years. She had a second short-lived talk show starting in 2012. Although it ran for just one season, she did win her only Daytime Emmy Award for hosting this comeback.
That cryptic plea to “don’t cry baby,” could be a reference to Lake’s 1990 appearance in mentor John Waters‘ comedy “Cry-Baby.” He had discovered her two years earlier and cast her as the lead, Tracy Turnblad, in the smash hit “Hairspray.” Lake made a cameo in the 2007 film version of the Broadway musical version of this story
We won’t find out for sure if Ricki is the Raven till she is unmasked. That will only happen if she loses a match-up or wins the show. Do you think we are right about the true identity of the Raven? Sound off in the comments section with your best guesses.
