Of the five celebrities on “The Masked Singer” to make it to Wednesday’s semi-final, the most surprised was the one hiding behind the Thingamajig mask. He shouldn’t have been so shocked given the rousing reception he got for his performance of “Ordinary People” by John Legend. We think we’ve figured out who is inside the cumbersome costume. And while he is used to hearing a crowd roar it isn’t when he is singing.
But the man inside the Thingamajig costume should get used to just that after nailing his first five appearances on this reality competition series. He has only been at risk of elimination once. That was in week 8 when he crooned “Haven’t Met You Yet” by Michael Bublé. He redeemed himself with the four judges (Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke) with the Usher hit “Caught Up.”
Prior to that, the Thingamajig had done himself proud with lively versions of The Commodores hit “Easy” in week 1 and The Temptations classic “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” in week 5. In between, he had changed it up in week 4 with his cover of “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves.
We’ve been busy rewatching all of the performances by the Thingamajig as well as the videos with all of the clues. And we think we’ve solved the mystery as to his real identity.
Keep reading for the fifth of “The Masked Singer” spoilers for the semifinal.
Who is the Thingamajig: Victor Oladipo, the NBA all-star who is currently a guard with the Indiana Pacers.
Thingamajig held up a book on American Sign Language which he says “taught him home to communicate with others”; Oladipo’s sister is deaf.
The Thingamajig demands that he not be called “Chewbacca.” However, he does concede that he and this furry “Star Wars” character do “celebrate together.” That makes sense when you know that Oladipo was born on May 4, which is also known as “Star Wars” day (as in “may the force be with you”).
Oladipo was born in Silver Spring, Maryland as was Thingamajig.
Like Thingamajig, Oladipo has suffered a setback, with a series of injuries sidelining him from the game.
Oladipo started his NBA career in 2013 with the Orlando Magic when he was the second pick in the draft, just like Thingamajig says. In one of the clues videos, we see the Thingamajig hold up a pair of sneakers after doing a bit of magic. And we see a cupcake with the number 4, which is what he wears on his jersey.
Oladipo played with the Magic for three seasons. After a year with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he moved on to the Pacers in 2016. He referenced two of those teams with the line: “What’s that he has? A magic case? Come on you all, keep up the pace!” And we see a shot of flowers that are blue and yellow, which are the Pacers colors.
The Thingamajig is by far the tallest of the contestants on “The Masked Singer”; Oladipo stands at just under 6 and a half feet.
Do you agree with us about who is the Thingamajig? We’ll only know that we got it right when the Thingamajig is unmasked and that won’t be till he is eliminated or wins season 2 of “The Masked Singer.” Do you think that Victor Oladipo is the Thingamajig?
