“The Voice” fans have been voting in our overnight poll for which of Dexter Roberts‘ three songs from Monday’s finale performance episode was his best, and a leading 47% said it was his solo cover of Randy Houser‘s “Anything Goes” (watch above). Rounding out our poll results, 28% voted for his coach duet with Blake Shelton of “Hard Workin’ Man” and 25% voted for his original song “Looking Back.” Do you agree or disagree with Dexter’s fans? In his pre-taped package, host Caron Daly asked Dexter what this whole experience meant to him and he responded, “It’s so overwhelming, man. I’m from a small, small town and this stuff don’t happen to people like me, you know?” This Fayette, Alabama resident came into “The Voice” with a slew of fans from his 2014 stint on “American Idol” — did they come through for Dexter in the overnight vote?
As for why he picked “Anything Goes,” Dexter’s coach/kissing buddy Blake confirmed, “This is the perfect song for Dexter right now because he’s one of those guys that absolutely pours his heart and soul into it. He pretty much gets lost in the moment. This song gives him the best opportunity he’s had so far to do that.”
Following Dexter’s performance all four coaches — Blake, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and John Legend — gave him a standing ovation. Kelly proclaimed, “This was my favorite other than the blinds. You were very smart to do this. I just love you in this vein.” Adam said, “It doesn’t matter what kind of music you’re into. At the end of the day, greatness is greatness and you have that in spades, my friend.” And Blake readily admitted, “That was the perfect song choice for you for this finale.”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about fans’ favorite performance: “During rehearsals Blake was surprised by how perfect of a song choice it was, telling Dexter that he probably should have sang it earlier but is glad he saved it. I’d have to agree–it was an emotional ballad that showed off his voice perfectly, creating a really effective stage atmosphere and a breakout moment for him on the show.”
