John Legend pits soul (Lisa Ramey) vs. pop rock (Betsy Ade) in ‘The Voice’ battle to ‘The Joke,’ but who ‘electrified’ him more? [WATCH]

During Monday’s third battle round episode of “The Voice” Season 16, John Legend paired up soul singer Lisa Ramey and pop rock artist Betsy Ade for a powerful sing-off to Brandi Carlile‘s “The Joke” (watch above). Before the battle John had his fingers crossed that another coach would steal the artist he decided not to advance, and his dreams ended up coming true. John chose to keep Lisa on his team for next week’s Live Cross Battles, while Kelly Clarkson swooped in to steal Betsy, giving her yet another female vocalist to mentor.

“First of all I would like to thank the gentlemen for not helping me at all in my decision,” John said about how Blake Shelton and Adam Levine refused to name the winner of the battle. “I came into today worried about this decision because I know both of you deserve to be on the show. They just showed me they belong on a big stage and they’re not afraid of the stage, they embrace it, and I love that about both of you. I love your energy together.”

When it finally time for John to make his pick, he declared, “I hate to break up this happy duo. I’m gonna pick the person that just electrified me just a little bit more with the fire in their voice. The winner of this battle is Lisa.” Later on backstage, John said he was “excited to explore all of the possibilities” with Lisa.

As for why Kelly stole Betsy for her team, she admitted, “I used my last steal for Betsy because I just really connect to her. I wanted her to blow me away. I was waiting for her. I literally was holding out my last steal for her, and I used it.”

In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the battle: “During rehearsal Khalid was impressed by both women and seemed a little bummed that John had pitted them against one another, but are we surprised by that rookie error at this point? I thought each of them began the performance on shaky ground, but once they joined together for the chorus it really soared, becoming more of a true duet than a battle in my opinion.”
