So rude! ‘The Voice’ opens Season 16 with Blake Shelton blocking John Legend from coaching Gyth Rigdon [WATCH]

Blake Shelton sure chose an interesting way of welcoming John Legend to Season 16 of “The Voice.” Moments after Gyth Rigdon began singing Uncle Kracker‘s “Drift Away” in the season premiere, Blake rudely slammed his hand down on his “Block” button to prevent the young country artist from joining the new coach’s team. “Who blocked me? They don’t want us to be together!” John shouted at Gyth after his performance was over. Watch “The Voice” blind audition video above.

Adam Levine laughed that John was just blocked “on the first hour of his first day,” before adding, “I can assure you it was Blake Shelton.” Blake tried to play it off by saying that Kelly Clarkson had blocked Gyth, but everyone knew the truth. John later joked, “We’re gonna call him ‘Block’ Shelton. He’s gonna devote all his energy searching for the real blocker.”

When the coaches asked Gyth about the origins of his unique name, he replied, “There was a lot of alcohol involved, I have no idea.” Blake then did his trademark move of pointing his finger at his own head and said, “Well, if you wanna feel right at home …”

Gyth teased Adam for not turning his chair around, especially as all three of the other coaches did. “I even hit a high note for you! Thanks a lot.” Adam’s explanation for not pushing his button was because he was “scared,” but he didn’t expand on what he meant by that.

Kelly and Blake fought to get Gyth on their teams, but he ultimately chose to join Team Blake. Perhaps it was because Blake compared him to Garth Brooks and said that he wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Season 16 finale? Or maybe Gyth was persuaded when Blake complimented his “awesome” biceps?
