When Adam Levine and John Legend both turned their chairs around for pop singer Ciera Dumas on Night 5 of “The Voice” blind auditions, rival coach Blake Shelton jumped in to try to to stop Adam from acquiring the 21-year-old North Carolina resident for his Season 16 team. “Whichever John Legend you pick, you guys should just hone in on that [shred],” Blake interjected, reigniting his old feud with Adam. Despite Blake’s wishes, Ciera decided to join Team Adam. Watch “The Voice” blind audition above.
“Blake tries to gang up on me but he can’t contain me,” Adam later bragged. When Adam asked Blake how he was feeling after Ciera’s decision, Blake responded that he was “sad” because he didn’t like to see Adam “get anything.” Neither Blake nor Kelly Clarkson turned their chairs around for Ciera.
Before Ciera’s performance of Demi Lovato‘s “Tell Me You Love Me,” she hinted that was a fan of both John and Kelly, so her decision to join Team Adam was a bit of a surprise. For his pitch, John raved that he was “mesmerized” by her voice, then remarked that she seemed “nervous” when he and Adam turned their chairs around.
The Blake-Adam feud has been going on for 16 seasons now, and it doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. Earlier in the episode, South Africa singer Selkii had to choose between Adam and Blake, with Blake reminding her that he’s won the show twice as many times as Adam. That’s true — Blake has won six championships so far while Adam has only won three. Selkii chose Team Blake.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about Ciera’s performance: “Pink-haired Ciera Dumas (admittedly, she’s had many hair colors over the years) was named ‘Most Likely to Win The Voice’ in her high school senior year superlatives before taking the real ‘Voice’ stage for her audition of ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ by Demi Lovato. Both Adam and John turned for her quickly and vibed to her performance while looking at her, just as Kelly and Blake did while not looking at her. Blake pitched for Ciera to join Team John, but she went her own way and joined Team Adam instead. So, yes, Adam keeps picking up the good ones–I think Ciera is a major threat to win!”
