Days before “The Voice” debuted its brand new round of competition known as the live Cross Battles, fans were excited about the concept. Instead of the usual Knockout rounds, these Cross Battles pit two artists from different teams against each other on live television with the at-home audience voting their favorites into the Finals. Now that we’ve seen the Cross Battles in action, do you think NBC should keep them as a permanent part of the reality TV show, or should they nix the idea going forward? Vote in our poll below.
The first half of the Top 32 artists competed during Monday’s first-ever Cross Battles episode, with the results set to be announced live on Tuesday night. (The second half of artists will battle next week.) Each coach got to pick an artist from their team to perform as well as the coach they wanted to compete against; that second coach then responded to the challenge by naming which artist they wanted to battle.
Monday’s eight Cross Battles consisted of:
Blake Shelton‘s Kim Cherry (“Poison”) vs. Kelly Clarkson‘s Betsy Ade (“You Oughta Know”)
Adam Levine‘s Mari (“My My My!”) vs. Blake’s Selkii (“Torn”)
John Legend‘s Lisa Ramey (“It Hurts So Bad”) vs. Kelly’s Karen Galera (“Unfaithful”)
Kelly’s Matthew Johnson (“Who’s Lovin’ You”) vs. Adam’s Domenic Haynes (“Damn Your Eyes”)
Kelly’s Presley Tennant (“Love on the Brain”) vs. John’s Kayslin Victoria (“Stay”)
Adam’s Celia Babini (“A Thousand Years”) vs. Blake’s Oliv Blu (“Gravity”)
Blake’s Dexter Roberts (“Believe”) vs. Adam’s Andrew Jannakos (“Yours”)
John’s Maelyn Jarmon (“Mad World”) vs. Adam’s Rod Stokes (“How Am I Supposed to Live Without You”)
America voted overnight to save eight of these artists (one from each battle), but the coaches still have the option of saving and/or stealing some of the contestants that weren’t chosen. We’ll see how this wrinkle plays out during Tuesday’s live results episode.
Below, read a brief sampling of “Voice” fans’ knee-jerk reactions to the live Cross Battles and then be sure to give us YOUR thoughts by sounding off down in the comments section below the poll.
Neal Flynn: “Wish the judges would continue to decide. It has now become just a popularity contest, rather than being based on talent.”
Jan: “Like the battles in whatever format. Love, love the show.”
Lydia: “I do not like this format. The pairings [were] very bad and some of the good singers can leave the show much too early.”
Caron Eck: “I think it was a huge mistake to put Domenic against Mathew, because Mathew is so much better.
Christian Greenleaf: “I really enjoyed Betsy Ade tonight. She was nearly flawless and the better of the two in the battle. However, I still really like Kim so I hope one of them is stolen!”
