“You don’t even have your braces off and you’re doing something so amazing,” said the mother of 14-year-old “The Voice” artist Mikaela Astel during Night 5 of “The Voice” blind auditions. Mikaela’s haunting rendition of Borns‘ “Electric Love” immediately wowed coach Kelly Clarkson, who pushed her button within seconds. “Your tone cannot be taught,” Kelly informed the wide-eyed youngster before reminding her, “I’ve had 14-year-olds [on my team before].” Even though John Legend also turned his chair around, Mikaela made the decision to join Team Kelly. As a refresher, Kelly won Season 14 with pop artist Brynn Cartelli (age 15) and then prevailed in Season 15 with country singer Chevel Shepherd (age 16). “It is beautiful, it is round, but it’s very angelic as well,” Kelly raved about Mikaela’s voice. “I hear a little Regina Spektor, a little Julia Michaels. It’s so interesting and cool and vibey and it’s so different. I think that that’s really important in this kind of competition.” Kelly would know, of course, since she’s been through this type of show before as the original winner of “American Idol” in 2002.
After Mikaela decided to join Team Kelly, the two-time winning coach asked John, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, “Why do I always get the young ones? I think I love potential.” John responded, “It’s the mother in you.” He may be onto something, as Kelly is the mother of two and has even found success writing children’s books.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about Mikaela’s performance: “Arial silk dancer Mikaela Astel is only 14 years old, but has been trying to break into the industry via YouTube covers and small gigs for years. She played the guitar and sang ‘Electric Love’ by BORNS, earning chair turns from both Kelly and John who referred to her as a future star. Adam told her to think of a name in her heart and say the name of the first one she thought of — that must have been Kelly because that’s the team she joined!”
