After two back-to-back victories on “The Voice,” voters seem to have turned on Team Kelly Clarkson. As a refresher, Kelly prevailed in Season 14 with pop singer Brynn Cartelli and again in Season 15 with country artist Chevel Shepherd. But in the aftermath of Tuesday’s Top 24 live results bloodbath, Kelly now only has two artists remaining on her team: Rod Stokes and Jej Vinson. Will her winning streak continue on for the third straight season, or will one of the other coaches — Blake Shelton, Adam Levine or John Legend — claim victory in Season 16?
Blake is currently in “The Voice” record books for winning three championships in a row in Season 2 (Jermaine Paul), Season 3 (Cassadee Pope) and Season 4 (Danielle Bradbery). Over the past dozen cycles, other coaches have tried to match Blake’s consecutive record, but only Kelly has come the closest with two wins … and counting.
Kelly went into the hectic Top 24 week with six artists to her name: Rod, Jej, Rebecca Howell, Matthew Johnson, Abby Kasch and Presley Tennant. After all of them sang on Monday, it was up to America to vote for their favorites and, surprisingly, only Rod made it through to the Top 13. That left Kelly with the tough decision of saving one artist — she chose Jej — and sending home the other four.
“Oh man, you guys, I just had no idea this was gonna happen,” said the two-time champ when it came time to make her big decision. Kelly continued, “I’m sorry y’all are here. I’m sorry I’m having to pick from practically my entire team but one person, so that makes it very difficult. I’m gonna go with somebody that just really blew me away right at the blinds and every time I give some homework they go away and they come back even better. I’m gonna have to go with this person. Please do not be sad, all the others. I’m gonna go with Jej.”
