“It’s been a powerful season,” Mandy Moore says about Season 3 of NBC’s “This Is Us” in the above Emmys FYC video featurette. In this Gold Derby exclusive, the cast reflects on some of the year’s most memorable storylines, including how Moore’s Rebecca originally met Milo Ventimiglia‘s Jack. “I love going back deeper into Jack’s past through his early days with Rebecca,” smiles Ventimiglia. “I’m very proud of what the show as a whole was able to accomplish. It’s inspiring.” “This Is Us” is a two-time Emmy nominee for Best Drama Series (2017-18) and has taken home three acting trophies so far, for lead Sterling K. Brown and guest stars Gerald McRaney and Ron Cephas Jones.
Moore adds that one of the hallmarks of the show is that “there’s something for everybody, whether it’s a storyline or a character or a particular issue that a character is dealing with.” In fact, “This Is Us” is so popular for NBC and 20th Century Fox Television that it was just renewed for three more seasons, which means fans will get to spend even more time with the Pearsons until at least 2022.
Chrissy Metz, who plays daughter Kate Pearson, emphasizes, “This is art that changes peoples’ lives because it’s real life.” Metz had her own memorable story in the third season including giving birth to a baby boy despite many dramatic complications along the way. Chris Sullivan, who portrays Kate’s husband Toby, adds, “This show offers a really unique opportunity at representing diversity.”
“Our audience goes across all ages, race, creeds, colors,” chimes in Brown, who plays Pearson’s adopted son Randall. During the third season Randall and his wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) had marriage issues after Randall ran for city council, but they thankfully patched things up by season’s end. “It’s interesting for me because we’re trying to just live the truth of these characters. I’ve had such a wonderful ride on this show,” Brown states.
And Justin Hartley, who portrays son Kevin Pearson, remarks, “They’re a family if nothing else, and so whatever may happen to one or the other, good or bad, there’s a support system there and it’s just a beautiful thing.” The cast members also praise their writers, led by showrunner Dan Fogelman, with Hartley noting, “You’re given a piece of material by a writer that wrote something that’s wonderful and we get that every single week.”
