They alive, dammit! Watch Tina Fey announce ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ interactive special: Jon Hamm needs to ‘clear his calendar’

“We are super excited that we are going to be doing for Netflix an ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ interactive special,” said Tina Fey during an Emmys FYSEE panel about the final season of the series. Recurring guest star Jon Hamm moderated the Q&A, which also included co-creator Robert Carlock and actors Ellie Kemper, Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess and Carol Kane. Watch Fey’s announcement above.

“We were one of the first original Netflix comedies,” Fey explained, “so we’re thrilled that we’re going to be the first interactive comedy that gets to do this. You get to … take these characters and you will be able to choose what decisions they make, and that will affect where the story goes. And talk about too many jokes, guys! I think it’s going to be a great fit with our style and the style of this show, and I think it’s going to be a beautiful way to complete the series.”

Hamm, who appeared on the show periodically as cult leader Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, wondered if he might possibly, maybe, sort of have some role to play in the new Netflix special, to which Fey answered, “Yeah, you need to clear your calendar.”

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” ran for four seasons and told the story of its title character (played by Kemper), who was held captive as part of an underground doomsday cult until her eventual escape. The series has earned Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Series every year for the last four years (2015-2018), and it’s eligible for a final nomination this year. The announcement of the “Schmidt” special, however, means the show may be eligible to compete for Best TV Movie in the 2020 contest, just like the interactive “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” will be competing at this year’s awards.

They alive, dammit! It’s a miracle!
