The Disney songbook includes dozens, if not hundreds, of iconic tunes from the past eight decades. “I 2 I” from “A Goofy Movie” is not one of them. Unfortunately, Uche found this out the hard way during “American Idol’s” Disney night when he was eliminated following his performance of the song that judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan and guest mentor Rebel Wilson had never heard of before. In other words, Uche really goofed up.
The writing was on the wall during Uche’s mentoring session with Rebel when she admitted, “I don’t think I’ve seen ‘A Goofy Movie.'” Uche joked that he “couldn’t be friends” with her because of that and pretended to walk away. Later on Rebel declared, “I think the song is a bit obscure, but I think if he brings the energy he should crush it.”
Uche had the audience on its feet with his rousing and energetic performance of “I 2 I.” However, while last week Uche was such a favorite of the judges that Lionel saved him from elimination, this time around they struggled to say anything positive. “You know, I have to be completely honest, I don’t know that song very well,” Katy proclaimed while dressed head-to-toe like Ursula from “The Little Mermaid.” “I see you as that goofy, adorable character, [but] I just thought maybe you had a little bit more voice.”
Lionel started his critique by saying that he loved Uche and that he “can’t do any wrong” before adding, “The truth of the matter is, the song wasn’t that familiar. But that’s okay.” Luke also bashed Uche’s song choice, saying, “Bottom line is, it’s not determinable that we don’t know the song. You come out here and you always give the same amount of energy.”
Unfortunately, America didn’t seem to connect with the “Goofy Movie” song because Uche ended up being eliminated along with Dimitrius Graham. The Top 8 singers who advanced to the next round of competition were Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Walker Burroughs, Wade Cota, Laine Hardy, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Alyssa Raghu and Madison VanDenburg.
