“The Raven is about metamorphosis,” Ricki Lake revealed to Nick Cannon about why she chose to dress up as the black bird on Fox’s “The Masked Singer” (watch above). Ricki was voted out of the reality TV show in Wednesday’s episode after her performance of Sara Bareilles‘ “Brave” failed to earn enough votes from the judges and in-studio audience. “[Raven] is about death, but it’s also about rebirth,” she continued on. “I went through the loss of my husband last year and this really was an opportunity for me to sort of share my journey through his loss. He was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
WEEK SIX SPOILERS: Who are the Bee, Monster, Peacock
Of the show’s panel of judges — Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong — only Robin correctly guessed that Ricki was hiding behind the Raven costume. As for the others, Jenny picked actress Raven-Symone, Ken chose talk show host Sheryl Underwood and Nicole went with John McCain‘s daughter Meghan McCain. This means Robin is now the only panelist to correctly guess two costumed characters after six weeks of competition.
“I love the anonymity” of “The Masked Singer,” Ricki admitted after she removed her mask. “I’m so bad at keeping a secret, you guys, so for me to not tell my family what I’m doing, it’s just been a ball.” Ricki dedicated her entire journey to her late husband, Christian Evans. During her three appearances on the show she performed a trio of power ballads: “Rainbow” by Kesha, “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga and now “Brave.”
WEEK FIVE SPOILERS: Who are the Alien, Lion, Rabbit
Many fans suspected that Raven was actually Ricki Lake as she fit most of the clues. She’s now the sixth celebrity to reveal their true identities on “The Masked Singer,” following actress/author Tori Spelling (as Unicorn), comedienne Margaret Cho (as Poodle), NFL personality Terry Bradshaw (as Deer), comedic legend Tommy Chong (as Pineapple) and Pittsburgh Steelers football player Antonio Brown (as Hippo).
In his “The Masked Singer” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about Ricki’s final performance: “Singing ‘Brave’ by Sarah Bareilles, her voice is so OBVIOUSLY Ricki Lake. She’s got a solid voice, but it’s not a professional singer. Jenny throws out the name Sarah Gilbert in desperation. She hits a few power notes at the end that have the judges cheering.”
