When she walked into her audition with a guitar and a cascade of brown hair,”American Idol” judge Luke Bryan compared her to Rachel McAdams in “The Notebook.” He also asks the 19-year-old who lives in Claremont, New Hampshire, about the wedding ring she is sporting at such a young age. But Evelyn Cormier is beaming as she explains that she actually got married at age 18 almost exactly a year ago.
That isn’t news for those who watched the fifth season of TLC’s “90 Day Fiance,” The show follows couples who applied for or have a K-1 visa that is granted for foreign fiances of American citizens. They have 90 days to decide whether to marry before the visa expires and the foreign-born half of the twosome must leave the U.S.
Evelyn and her husband-to-be, David Vazque Zermeno, 27, who hails from Granada, Spain, both from Christian backgrounds and both virgins before marriage, met after David saw a Facebook page featuring Evelyn’s band and sent her a message. While he was uncertain about living in a small town like Claremont, they nonetheless said, “I do.”
Evelyn auditions in New York City, where last year’s winner Maddie Poppe was discovered. She has a seductive throaty voice yet strong that coats the words like warm whiskey as she launches into Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games.” Katy Perry is mesmerized: “Literally, one of my favorite voices I’ve heard in my whole life.” As for Lionel Richie, “You have a sound. You have a sound that is yours. … I’m thrilled that we have you.” Of course, it is three thumb’s up.” Katy gives a few last words of advice: “Evelyn, pick the right songs.”
