Will the next winner of “Survivor” be a 21-year-old college student from Waco, Texas?
According to Gold Derby’s “Edge of Extinction” racetrack odds, Lauren O’Connell is far ahead of the pack with leading 9/2 odds to win the $1 million check. It’s a huge show of support for the castaway who’s been on the bottom for most of the game — both physically and mentally. However, with a hidden immunity idol still in her pocket and the fact that she’s no longer tethered to huge targets like Kelley Wentworth (who was eliminated) and Dan “Wardog” DaSilva (who betrayed her), might Lauren sneak her way into the winner’s circle?
Lauren started out this 38th season on the always-losing Manu tribe, but despite several repeated trips to tribal council she was never voted out. The first time she almost grabbed the boat to Extinction Island was in the fourth episode, but her alliance with Kelley and Wardog helped her overcome the one-two punch of Rick Devens and David Wright. Then in the surprise double tribal council with two tribes voting out one person, Lauren and Wendy Diaz tied with the most votes, but on a re-vote it was Wendy that was eliminated.
Following the tribe mix-up, Lauren became physically ill and was a detriment to her Lesu tribe members in challenges, but luckily she was still spared week after week. Once the three tribes merged into one, Lauren fell into the background as much bigger targets — Joe Anglim, Eric Hafemann, Julia Carter, David Wright and Kelley Wentworth — were voted out one after the other.
While Lauren has the best odds of winning the game, two other castaways are nipping at her heels: Victoria Baamonde (5/1 odds) and Rick (6/1 odds). With Victoria now feeling on the outs with the rest of the group, and Rick’s closest ally David being voted out last week, both castaways will have their work cut out for them if they want to make it to the final tribal council.
As for the other five people still at the Vata camp, here’s how they place on our winner’s chart: Gavin Whitson is fourth at 15/2 odds, Ron Clark is fifth at 21/2 odds, Julie Rosenberg is sixth at 12/1 odds, Wardog is seventh at 14/1 odds and finally Aurora McCreary at 28/1 odds.
