‘World of Dance’ behind the scenes: Derion and Madison made a big change before their showstopping Cut routine [WATCH]

The contemporary duo Derion and Madison have made it to the Divisional Final on “World of Dance” along with their Upper Division rivals Briar Nolet and Poppin John. That was thanks to the big score they earned during the Cut. But they took a chance when they presented their routine on the show. As you can see from the behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage above, they had a different ending in mind from the one they showed the judges.

“We all know the experience of being in a relationship that you don’t know why you’re staying,” Derion explained about the meaning of the dance. That’s evident in the passionate push-and-pull through their performance set to The Weeknd‘s “Call Out My Name,” but the routine originally ended with Derion making a flying leap over Madison, missing her as she ducks out of the way. When they brought that routine before the judges, though, they took out the leap and had Madison simply pull free of Derion’s grasp and walk away from him.

For a duo known for their impressive acrobatic feats, it was risky for them to take out a climactic trick in favor of a quieter, more emotionally intimate finish, but it turned out to be a smart move. The judges usually encourage the high-flying contemporary acts to dig deep into the emotions of their dances instead of just showing off their stunts, and their revised ending did just that, leaving you with the vulnerable expression on Madison’s face instead just another big maneuver. Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough all gave standing ovations and awarded them an average score of 94.7, their best of the season so far.

But Derion and Madison will have to be even better than that in the Divisional Final to beat Nolet and John, since both soloists actually outscored them during the Cut. Who do you think will advance to the World Final at the end of the season?
