How did Ricky Gervais do as 2020 Golden Globes host? [POLL]

After mixing things up last year by having Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg host the 2019 Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went back to their favorite emcee in recent years for this year’s kudos: Ricky Gervais. This marked the funnyman’s fifth year hosting the annual gala after his previous stints in 2010-12 and ’16. So how did Gervais do hosting the 2020 Golden Globe ceremony on Sunday, January 5? Vote in our poll below.

Some of Gervais’ monologue jokes that had the audience of the Beverly Hilton rolling on the floor included poking fun at “pedophile movies” like “Surviving R. Kelley” and … “The Two Popes,” Joe Pesci looking like Baby Yoda, Martin Scorsese being too short to go on theme park rides, Leonardo DiCaprio dating younger women, “Cats” being a box office bomb and Apple running “sweat shots in China.”

Gervais noted several times this was his “last time” as host of the Golden Globes, but didn’t he say that last time, too? He earned wild applause when he told the winning celebs to “f*** off” after they gave their speech because they had so many awards to get to this evening.

Gervais is former Golden Globe winner for producing and acting in the British version of “The Office” (2004). He was also nominated for starring in “Extras” (2008) and “Derek” (2015). Many awards pundits thought he’d be nominated for his latest Netflix comedy series “After Life,” but he was snubbed in favor of Bill Hader (“Barry”), Ben Platt (“The Politician”), Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”), Paul Rudd (“Living with Yourself”) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”)

While the Golden Globes went host-less for many decades, in 2010 the HFPA started a new trend of hiring ceremony ringleaders each year. Besides Gervais, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted together in 2013-15, Jimmy Fallon oversaw the 2017 ceremony, Seth Meyers presented the 2018 kudos and Oh and Samberg starred last year.
