8:00 p.m. — “Previously on ‘The Masked Singer’!” In last week’s ninth episode, the T-Rex received the least number of votes and was forced to unmask in front of America. YouTube vloggger JoJo Siwa was revealed to be hiding inside the T-Rex costume, which the panelists correctly predicted. “I actually paused my tour to do this,” she told Nick Cannon in her post-show interview. Now that the Super 9 have finally come together in one group, who will be eliminated tonight? Let the guessing game begin!
8:05 p.m. — The Super 9 are announced to the audience while us viewers at home get a few bonus clues. Group A has a combined 15.4 million Instagram followers. Everyone in group B has been interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and Group C has a combined seven Grammy nominations.
8:15 p.m. — First up tonight is Turtle and, just like his costume, he’s hardcore about being the best at everything. He realizes to win he has to become one with the turtle so he runs a 10k before each show wearing a 40 pound vest — a quarter of his body weight. Even though he’s not a dancer, he’s added a ton of choreography. For his super clue, we see him hold up what looks like a comic book called “The Amazing Adventures of Shellboy.” For the record, it’s $10.13. Tonight he’s singing “Higher Love” by Steven Winwood/Whitney Houston. Turtle has a good pop voice and definitely sounds like a professional singer. He’s even got a nice falsetto going on between dance moves. Following his performance, Turtle says he’s not known for just one thing. The panel tosses out guesses including Drew Lachey, Brian Littrell, Nick Lachey or Chris Evans.
8:25 p.m. — Next up tonight is Kangaroo and coming into this competition she knew she had to put on a brave, hidden face. She came back to show her strengths and bounce back after being plagued by villainous rumors about her past. She’s still incredibly nervous every time she is on the stage and after being put through hell over the past year, this performance is her response. But first we get one last clue: A plastic kangaroo? I’m confused. Anyways, tonight she is singing “Not Ready to Make Nice” by the Dixie Chicks. She’s got a sexy, smoky voice that sounds familiar but I still can’t put my finger on it. Following her performance she reveals she may be a kangaroo, but she’s never lived in Australia. From there the panel tosses out guesses like Amber Rose, LeAnn Rimes and India.Arie.
8:35 p.m. — White Tiger is the last singer from Group A and he’s about to be let out of his cage. When he first got here he had never sang in front of a crowd, but as soon as he hit the stage he lit up like a light bulb. He may not have the best voice, but he knows he can turn this audience into the raunchiest party on the block. He’s been rehearsing around the clock to make sure this performance is so sexy it hurts. For a final clue we see him do a little dance and say “swish, swish.” Tonight White Tiger is singing “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred. He’s not even on the correct beat and he’s easily the worst singer in the Super 9 but he is owning it. The audience is eating up this terrible vocal performance. Following his song, White Tiger says he’s not just brawn, he’s brains as well and wrote a best-selling book. The panel guesses he is J.J. Watt, Rob Gronkowski or Joe Manganiello.
8:40 p.m. — The singer with the least amount of votes in Group A and at risk of being eliminated at the end of tonight’s episode is White Tiger. Voices prevail for now, but White Tiger still has a chance to move on.
8:45 p.m. — Kitty is kicking things off for Group B. After starting young, for a large part of her life she struggled with her self image. Her mind only saw darkness and ugliness when she looked in the mirror. When Kitty first got to “Masked Singer,” she felt like she was at a party for someone else. When she puts on the Kitty costume she feels assertive, confident and beautiful. She finally feels she deserves to be here. And for her final clue, last season’s Tree makes an appearance as Kitty says, “Christmas is truly the most wonderful time of the year. Ring any jingle bells?” Interesting! Perhaps Kitty has a connection to “Saturday Night Live” or Ana Gasteyer. For tonight’s performance, Kitty is singing “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” by Celine Dion. It’s no easy task and Kitty doesn’t exactly sound like a professional pop diva, but her heart is in it. Following her performance, Kitty says she was not dreaming when Robert Redford helped her get her very first role. The panel guesses she is Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens, Emma Roberts or Avril Lavigne.
8:55 p.m. — Banana is next up for Group B and he says when he first got here he was just a party boy looking for a good time. But after his first performance, he didn’t want to take off the mask. Banana then reveals a dramatic injury from his past made him forget the lyrics to his second song and now he can’t believe he’s in the Super 9. For his super clue he reveals you might be a kindred spirit if you’ve ever rocked a mullet. Tonight he’s singing “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. He’s got a good voice and I’m starting to wonder if this could be Gary Busey? Busey famously earned an Oscar nomination playing Buddy Holly and was in a motorcycle accident. Banana says “blue collar” has many meanings and when he says he’s a funny guy, he’s not stand-up funny. The panel guesses he could be Brett Michaels, Brad Paisley or Billy Ray Cyrus.
9:05 p.m. — Frog is up last for Group B and he loves this competition. The passion for performing he’s lost over the years has been totally reinvigorated. Plus, his costume has allowed him to do things he couldn’t when he was concerned about his image. Now he can be the same guy on stage that he is at home with the family. Although he knows there are some crazy talented vocalists in this competition, he’s busting his butt to entertain the audience in ways they can’t. For his super clue we see a statue of a knight. Tonight he’s singing “Jump” by Kriss Kross. Frog definitely sounds like a professional rapper and he’s so much fun to watch on stage. He’s probably my favorite in the competition. Following Frog’s performance he says he’s not a trained dancer. The panel guesses that Frog could be Sisqo, Omarion or Lil’ Romeo.
9:10 p.m. — The votes are in and the singer in danger of being unmasked at the end of tonight’s episode is Banana. Will it be him, White Tiger or someone from Group C?
9:20 p.m. — First up from Group C is Night Angel and she says her time on this show has felt like cloud nine. She speaks with a British accent that I’m not sure is real. She says she’s avoided putting herself front and center for years. She’s been scared of standing alone after facing rejection in her path. Helping others for so long has made spreading her own wings feel incredible. Even though Night Angel is hidden behind a mask she feels endless possibilities are in her future. For her super clue we a tricycle roll by. Maybe she’s part of a trio? For her performance tonight Night Angel is singing “Rise Up” by Andra Day and this woman sing! She belts this song out with range and emotion, inspiring yet another standing ovation. Following Night Angel’s performance she says she’s not just a voice, she’s a mogul. The panel guesses she is Tamar Braxton, Brandy or Tisha Campbell.
9:35 p.m. — Next up is Rhino and he says this journey has forced him to grow in ways he’d never dreamed. Earlier in life he tried to be what everyone wanted him to be. He became comfortable playing a role. He’s since learned progress is made on the edge of your comfort zone and once again he mentions airplanes. For his super clue, Rhino says he is humored by the fact the panel thinks he’s an athlete. He’s had a passion for music since he was a child, had hits on Billboard and says the viewers may even own an album of his. He then shows us a slot machine, so perhaps he lives in Vegas? For tonight’s performance Rhino is singing “What a Man Gotta Do” by the Jonas Brothers. He definitely sounds like a professional singer and has consistently been one of the best vocalists. There’s definitely some twang in that voice. Following his performance, Rhino reveals he is not nearly as tall as they think he is. The panel tosses out guesses including Vince Gill, Duff McKagan and Derek Jeter.
9:45 p.m. — The last singer tonight is Astronaut. His journey on “Masked Singer” couldn’t have come at a better time in his life. For years he has been seeking a chance to blast away labels that have been imposed on him. On his old planet, something happened that changed the course of his career. Astronaut was forced to start over but negativity made it difficult to launch again. Now he’s free to explore new territories. For his super clue we see Astronaut break a record, which probably means he’s the Guinness World Record holder of the bunch. Tonight Astronaut is singing “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley. He shows he’s true singer by showing off his falsetto, but he doesn’t quite have the power to give this anthem the punch it needs. He also sounds slightly out of breath in this remixed version of an 80’s classic. Following the performance, Astronaut reveals he has never had traditional voice training. The panel thinks he is David Archuleta, JC Chasez or Ryan Tedder.
9:50 p.m. — The votes for Group C are in and the singer in the bottom three is Rhino. He will face off with White Tiger and Banana to decide who is unmasked.
9:59 p.m. — The panel will now decide which of the bottom three tonight will be unmasked — White Tiger. Banana and Rhino have been spared. Before he reveals his identity we get final guesses from the panel: Rob Gronkowski (Robin and Jenny), Jon Cena (Nicole) and J.J. Watt (Ken). Finally, White Tiger pulls off the mask and reveals he is in fact, Rob Gronkowski! At least half the panel got it right. That’s a wrap for tonight!
