This weekend will be all about “The Suicide Squad.” Director James Gunn helms this sequel to 2016’s cult hit “Suicide Squad” (no “The”). It’s the 10th film in the DC Extended Universe and stars A-listers like Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone and Viola Davis. The comic book flick officially debuts in theaters on August 5, and will start streaming for free to HBO Max subscribers the next day.
The original “Suicide Squad” made $746 million worldwide, with $325 million of that being here in the states. Its domestic opening weekend gross was $133 million, which begs the question: can “The Suicide Squad” do anywhere near those numbers while in the midst of a worldwide pandemic? So far the Covid-era box office record goes “Black Widow,” which scooped up $80 million in domestic ticket sales its first weekend (plus another $60 million in Disney+ streaming sales, which don’t count toward its box office numbers).
In Gold Derby’s predictions center, you can predict how much money the #1 earner will make, from these five choices:
Less than $25 million
$25 million – $50 million
$50 million – $75 million
$75 million – $100 million
More than $100 million
Where do you “The Suicide Squad” will ultimately fall for the weekend of August 6 – August 8, if indeed is does end up being the #1 movie?
