Movies with multiple mentions on the Oscars shortlists: ‘No Time to Die,’ ‘Dune’ …

As was to be expected, the announcement of the 94th Oscars shortlists on December 21 caused major shifts in the current film awards race as the teams behind hundreds of submitted features learned whether or not the academy viewed their work as worthy of recognition. Some hopes were dashed, including those of the makers of recent Palme d’Or winner “Titane” and the musicians who worked on “Cyrano” and “Luca.” Other films, such as “The Green Knight” and “Last Night in Soho,” were given significant boosts by landing on one list each, while several were fortunate enough to earn multiple mentions.

A total of 73 films ended up being mentioned across seven feature film categories: Best Documentary Feature, Best International Feature Film, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. Following the creation of the category ahead of last year’s ceremony, this marks the first instance of Best Sound hopefuls being shortlisted. Also moving on to the next round of voting are 45 short films across three categories (Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, and Best Live Action Short).

Most of the shortlists were each compiled by one specific branch of the academy, while the Best International Feature Film one was determined by members of all branches and the Best Live Action Short one by members of four branches. The 10-15 titles in each category now face the next challenge of making it into their respective final fives.

Check out our gallery of the 12 feature films that made multiple appearances (“No Time to Die” leads with five followed by “Dune” with four) and be sure to set a reminder for the 94th Oscar nominations announcement on Tuesday, February 8.
