Breeders’ Cup Overview

Breeders' Cup Classic: World's Greatest Race

WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 2

WHERE: Santa Anita Park, California

WHERE TO VIEW: NBC, 5-6 p.m. PT/ 8-9 p.m. ET

"Breeders' Cup is the richest two-day event in sports," says Peter Rotondo, VP of Media and Entertainment. "$27 million in purses and awards are given away in two days. It's the Super Bowl of horse racing."

The Breeders' Cup Classic is the culminating race of the horse racing season — a mile and a quarter for $5 million, which is the largest purse in North America.

"There will be more than $150 million bet over the two days around the world," Rotondo adds. "For a small amount of money you can wager on the Breeders' Cup and make thousands because there is so much money in the pools."

The winning horse receives a trophy that features a bronze reproduction of the Torrie horse that was created in Florence by Giovanni da Bologna in the late 1580s. The original is in the Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

For the second year in a row, the Breeders' Cup Classic race will be run at Santa Anita Park, which is adjacent to Hollywood and a favorite locale of celebrities, writers, producers and studio and TV network execs. Many famous films have been shot there, including "Seabiscuit" (nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture) and "Wally's World," plus TV shows like "Modern Family" (four time Emmy winner as Best Comedy Series), "New Girl" and "America's Next Top Model."
