The awards will be presented on Feb. 16 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The lifetime achievement honor will be given to three-time Oscar-winning sound mixer Chris Newman ("The Exorcist," "Amadeus," "The English Patient") while Jonathan Demme is to be feted with the filmmaker award.
As a precursor prize, these kudos, now in their 49th year, have an uneven track record with about two-thirds of the nominees going on to contend at the Oscars. Indeed, this year only three of the five CAS nominees for Best Sound Mixing in a Live Action Film — – "Les Miserables," "Lincoln" and "Skyfall" — reaped Oscar bids. The other Oscar contenders are "Argo" and "Life of Pi."
