A new Oscar race begins even before the Academy Awards for the previous year are handed out in February when Hollywood heads to the hills for the Sundance Film Festival every January. In mid May, the Cannes Film Festival is the launching pad for a few more films. Awards season kicks into high gear in the late summer, when a trifecta of film festivals — Telluride, Toronto and Venice — take place. They are followed a few weeks later by the New York Film Festival.
In 2019, the experts at Gold Derby predicted that “Roma” which debuted in Venice, would sweep the Oscars as it had done well with the various guilds. We track all of those precursor prizes as well as the winners of the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and leading critics kudos. And we consider the box office success (or failure) of each contender and listen to industry chatter to keep pace with the ever-changing race.
What will come out on top at the 2020 Oscars? Will there be another upset, a la “Green Book”? As we update our Oscar predictions for each category often, be sure to bookmark this page and keep checking back as the race heats up.
