I wanted to create a discussion on what you all think are the best time recasts of an established soap character. (i.e. Not taking over for a child actor in a SORAS situation or something. I mean the role was identified with an actor and someone had to follow it.)

My vote is the role of Edward Quartermaine when John Ingle took over for David Lewis. The Lewis version was a rascal and wiley af. The Ingle version had those qualities but also had a very tender side especially in scenes with Lila. When Ingle died and they finally retired the character it was well handled. Now if only Jed Allen hadn’t been in the role when Anna Lee died. That’s the worst recast imo.

My vote would go to Greg Vaughan. He took over the role of Eric Brady from Jensen Ackles who was great in the role, even garnering a daytime emmy nomination. Greg vaughan has been wonderful in this role, and even took home a daytime emmy. 🙂

Robin Strasser took over the role of Dorian from Claire Malis, who was a recast of Nancy Pinkerton, on One Life To Live…. Hillary B Smith was a recast of the amazing Margaret Colin; Ellen Dolan was a recast of the amazing Hillary B Smith, in the role of Margo on As The World Turns. Julianne Moore was a great recast in the role of Frannie on ATWT. Douglass Watson was a recast of Robert Emhardt as Mac Cory on Another World. Martha Byrne was a recast of Lucy Deakins on ATWT. Victoria Wyndham was a recast of Robin Strasser on Another World. the list is endless, but since I regard Robin Strasser’s Dorian as truly one of a handful of my all-time favorite roles and actresses, I choose her.

I loved Robin Strasser on OLTL. I wish I’d seen some of her predecessors for comparison.

Erika Slezak (Viki, OLTL) hands down. With Robin Strasser (Dorian, OLTL) a close second and Kassie dePaiva (Blair, OLTL) a strong third.

These are great mentions. Of everyone who’s been said so far, I’m also gravitating towards Robin Strasser’s Dorian. Some others I’ve loved (I’m not counting characters who were in high school or younger when their switch happened):

Anne Heche as Vicky/Marley on AW
Judi Evans as Paulina on AW
Martha Madison as Belle on DAYS
Marci Miller as Abigail on DAYS
Heather Lindell as Jan on DAYS (maybe an odd pick, but she improved the role 100 times over from its previous incarnation)

Yes, Anne Heche AND Jensen Buchanan – forgot those! and Judi Evans as Paulina! Anna Holbrook as Sharlene (although there was an 11 year gap between actresses). Julia Barr was a recast in the role of Brooke on All My Children! Sharon Gabet was a recast as Raven on The Edge of Night! Leslie Charleson was a recast as Monica on General Hospital! (o.k., the list is endless!)

I also would have to say Chandler Massey as Will Horton, Days.

Fun Fact: Robin Strasser’s middle name is “Victory in Europe” on account of her being born on VE Day.

Many of my top choices were already mentioned so here are some others that come to mind:

This one may be somewhat controversial but I gotta go with Tamara Braun as Carly on GH. What she did with that role was make it her own; and thought I didn’t like her at the time, I’ve come to realize she did a really fantastic job in that role.

    Some others I’d also mention:

Lisa Peluso as Ava on “Loving”: She was like the third or fourth actress to play that role and has become the one that most people remember.

Jacob Young as JR Chandler on “All My Children”: A number of actors had played the role over the years; and a few were even of note in this role (Jonathan Bennett, Jesse McCartney) but Jacob really made this character someone worth watching and made him a villian that you sometimes even rooted for.

Trevor St. John as Todd Manning/Victor Manning on “One Life To Live”: It was a nearly herculean task to replace Roger Howarth but man TSJ did an admirable job of making this role his own. Even to the point of many being upset when Howarth returned to the role years later. TSJ delivered some of the finest performances on soap operas in the 2000’s and 2010’s.

Bree Williamson as Jessica Buchanan on “One Life To Live”: I was a huge Erin Torpey fan but I have to say Bree really ended up delivering in this role and made Jessica a mature, layered character and I’m not sure Torpey would have been able to pull off playing all those alternative personalities.

David Fumero as Christian Vega on “One Life To Live”: Certainly Fumero will never be confused as one of the great actors of our time and Christian will never be considered one of the best OLTL characters; but Fumero took over this role from a very popular actor and in time proved himself to be an actor worth his salt on OLTL and had tremendous longevity on the show.

and lastly, Cady McClain as Rosanna Cabot on “As The World Turns”: Let me as you this who even remembers Yvonne Perry as Rosanna at all?

    Good choice. Very good choice.

and Greg was also a fantastic recast on GH; certainly an improvement over Jacob Young whose work on GH was nothing special.

It is so weird to think of three actors who seem as different as Greg Vaughan, Jacob Young and Jonathan Jackson all playing the same role.

Greg Vaughan is a great Eric Brady, but he came into the role so long after Jensen Ackles had been not only gone from DAYS but deeply established as Dean Winchester on Supernatural that it doesn’t feel like a fair comparison with others who stepped in a role that was recently vacated. But Vaughan’s first year as Eric was incredible.

And I’d say that JR Chandler is easily Jacob Young’s signature role.
