    some of my best:

Jon Lindstorm-Craig Montgomery- he was able to bring balance back to the character after the recast shuffle the previous few years. He had the layers of Scott Bryce’s Craig, but could be charming as Hunt Block’s Craig

Tamara Braun-Carly Corinthos- I thought Sarah Brown did such an amazing that the character was not recast-able in my eyes, Tamara stepped up to the plate to bring a new depth and maturity to the Carly character.

    Worst

Jerry VerDorn-Clint Buchanan- I place this more on how the character was written than the actual actor

Jacob Young-Lucky Spencer-I chalk this up to more of the storyline during that period.

Best recasts: Chandler Massey as Will Horton, Dylan Patton was awful (yet he got an Emmy nomination, go figure!).

Anne Heche and Jensen Buchanan – particularly since Ellen Wheeler was great in the dual roles of Marley and Victoria as well! (:

Hillary B Smith and Ellen Dolan – particularly since Margaret Colin was great as Margo too!

Robin Mattson as Heather on General Hospital and as Gina on Santa Barbara!

Julianne Moore as Frannie on As the World Turns!

Robin Strasser – probably my all-time favorite recast, considering she is the only REAL Dorian for me! She was the 3rd actress to play Dorian.

Kassie DePaiva as Blair on OLTL and Eve on Days – esp. since Blair was originally an Eurasian character played by Mia Korf!

Van Hansis as Luke Snyder on ATWT!

Bree Williamson as Jessica on OLTL, esp. since Erin Torpey was so wonderful, but so was Bree!

Greg Vaughan as Eric Brady on Days – he really soared in the role! and I loved Jensen Ackles’s take on the role too.

Worst recasts: Elaine Princi as Dorian on OLTL – I was so happy when the REAL Dorian returned!

Glynis O’Connor as Margo on ATWT – glad that Ellen Dolan returned after a one-year absence!

Laura Wright as Carly on General Hospital – I know others adore her, but I find her shrill, she shouts all of her lines, and has made Carly so totally despicable – I preferred Sarah Brown, Tamara Braun and even the short-lived Jessica Botsford too.

Jacob Young as Lucky on GH – inexplicably he won his only Emmy for his worst role! He just wasn’t a good fit at all as Lucky, but was great as Rick on B&B and J.R. on AMC!

the majority of those actors /actresses really made the role their own I forgot they were recast

i’m surprised you picked Kassie DePavia for worst. I thought she killed both of those roles

Absolutely agree. Your mention of Jon Lindstrom also got me thinking about Spencer Grammer, who I thought did an admirable job right out of the gate with her unique take on the role of Craig’s daughter, Lucy.

Some other ATWT cast members who proved to be excellent recasts:
    Grayson McCouch (Dustin “Dusty” Donovan)
    Cady McClain (Rosanna Ryan)
    Jon Prescott (Mike Kasnoff)
    Austin Peck (Brad Snyder)

Best: John Ingle as Edward Quartermaine on GH, taking over an iconic role from David Lewis and effortlessly turning it out as his own.

Worst: Jed Allen as Edward Quartermaine (GH).  WTF was this????? Jed Allen was not even two years older than the actor playing his son and was about 20 years younger than Anna Lee for crying out loud! He was painful to watch during this period when they seemed to be doing whatever they could to ruin the Qs.

She’s a very talented actress but I think she was completely wrong for both roles. GH should cast her in an original role.

Great mentions! I think when there a ‘worst,’ a lot of that falls on the casting director/EP who made the decision. For example, Darius McCrary was a bad recast for Malcolm on Y&R, and there’s really nothing he could have done about it. He was just a bad choice for the role.

To me, a great recast either makes you forget about the great person that was in the role before or makes the character their own in the way that enhances the character without contradicting the prior version too much. So a few standouts that come to mind:

Martha Madison (Belle, DAYS) — Really redefined Belle to make her an adult version of the character that had the same essence but went in a new direction (and this is in comparison to Kristen Storms, not Charity Rahmer)

Laura Wright (Carly, GH) — This woman annoys me pretty much every day of the week, but the character really feels like hers and, as bad as she is now, is much mellower and more tolerable than her predecessors were while playing the less mature version (though I do also think Tamara Braun was a great recast)

Anne Heche (Vickie/Marley, AW) — She had big shoes to fill stepping in for Ellen Wheeler, and absolutely killed

you’d have to add Victoria Wyndham to one of the best recasts list as Rachel Cory on Another World (taking over from a very popular Robin Strasser). Victoria stepped into the role when Rachel was in the most popular love triangle on soaps and she turned the role into the anchor of the show for the duration of its run (another 27 years!). Victoria should have received more Daytime Emmy nominations than she did.

Someone mentioned Jed Allan being a terrible recast in the role of Edward on GH – true enough, but he was also one of the best recasts ever too in the role of C.C. Capwell on Santa Barbara – he was the 4th actor to play the role as the first 3 were all wrong for the role and lasted for mercifully brief periods of time. Then they got the role right with Jed Allan!!!

I liked Hunt Block’s Craig, but ATWT fans were either indifferent or never really warmed up to the character. He had amazing chemistry with all his female co stars and got the best lines.

Does anyone recall the audience reaction when Peter Bergman took over for Terry Lester for the Jack Abbot role ?
