Never know where to put this thread, but Daytime seems alright, as this is where American ‘Soaps’ are discussed (though the British ones are far superior).
Last year, the longlist for the public voted categories were revealed early April, and the shortlisted final nominations, with all categories announced early May.
So with the longlist (and later, the shortlist) due soon, who are people predicting to get a nod at the biggest awards in British Soap? As ever, Coronation Street, Doctors, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks will be the contending soaps.
Also, there have been reports that this year, the ceremony will (FINALLY) be broadcast LIVE on ITV!

ReplyCopy URLMay 9, 2017 at 10:16 am #1202088290What is up with the Hollyoaks popularity in Best Actor and Actress? None of their six deserved a nod – only Sophie Porley (who wasn’t even longlisted).
How only one Emmerdale actress made it in baffles me too. All three should be there. Serious vote splitting I imagine. Still, opens it up more for Charlotte Bellamy to finally win Best Actress!
I would also like to know what Jasmine Armfield had to do to get a nomination anywhere!? She has been one of the very few beacons of light in a dull year for Eastenders. Complete sham she has not been recognised. She’s the best actress they have, aside from Lacey Turner.

May 9, 2017 at 10:33 am #1202088298Best Soap
Coronation Street
Doctors
EastEnders
Emmerdale
HollyoaksShould Win: Emmerdale (no contest, and it is dominating every other awards ceremony)
Best Actor
Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt) – Coronation Street
Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle) – Emmerdale
John Middleton (Ashley Thomas) – Emmerdale
Jamie Lomas (Warren Fox) – Hollyoaks
Gregory Finnegan (James Nightingale) – HollyoaksShould Win: John Middleton – Emmerdale (there is just no contest)

Lucy Fallon (Bethany Platt) – Coronation Street
Lacey Turner (Stacey Fowler) – EastEnders
Charlotte Bellamy (Laurel Thomas) – Emmerdale
Anna Passey (Sienna Blake) – HollyoaksShould Win: Charlotte Bellamy – Emmerdale (She has never won Best Actress, and has been sensational, but the popularity of Kym Marsh may sway the public)
Villain of the Year
Connor McIntyre (Pat Phelan) – Coronation Street
Lucy-Jo Hudson (Rhiannon Davis) – Doctors
Jake Wood (Max Branning) – EastEnders
Gillian Kearney (Emma Barton) – Emmerdale
Persephone Swales-Dawson (Nico Blake) – HollyoaksShould Win: Gillian Kearney (Emma) or Jonathon Wrather (Piers) – Emmerdale (they have been good at giving every Soap an award the past couple of years, so this may go to Doctors)
Best Comedy Performance

Elisabeth Dermot Walsh (Dr Zara Carmichael) – Doctors
Tameka Empson (Kim Fox-Hubbard) – EastEnders
Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) – Emmerdale

Ritu Aryu (Dr Megan Sharma) – Doctors
Zack Morris (Keegan Baker) – EastEnders
Sally Dexter (Faith Dingle) – Emmerdale

Dido Miles (Dr Emma Reid) – Doctors
Diane Parish (Denise Fox) – EastEnders

May 10, 2017 at 10:05 am #1202089101I can’t understand why Jake Wood and Persephone Swales-Dawson have been nominated over Annette Badland and Cameron Moore for Villain of the Year. Persephone Swales-Dawson is a HORRENDOUS Actress and Jake Wood has not done anything worthy to be in that category yet.
It baffles me that Lacey Turner has been nominated for Best Actress over Diane Parish, since she’s barely done anything this year and Natalie J. Robb should have been shortlisted for Best Actress.
It’s a bit of a surprise that no one from EastEnders got shortlisted for Best Actor. I can’t see EastEnders or Hollyoaks doing well at the awards.

Yeah Best Villain is cocked up. Hopefully it clears the way for an Emmerdale win.
I’m not surprised Lacey Turner got in. She’s fiercely popular – I believe she has more British Soap Awards than any other actor. If Jasmine Armfield got longlisted, I think she’d be up instead of either Turner or Passey. Also, if Danny Boy Hatchard got longlisted for Actor, that would have given Eastenders a stronger shot at a shortlisted nod over one of the Hollyoaks boys.
Simply put, Eastenders didn’t longlist their strongest six, and are now more vulnerable to walking home empty handed.
I hope Hollyoaks goes away empty handed. It deserves nothing. Eastenders deserves something for the Rebecca storyline, but as that has been snubbed, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them go away empty handed too. Though a consolation prize for Enders is likely in Partnership, Comedy Performance or (a massive outside shot, but still just about possible) Male Dramatic Performance.
If I were deciding the winners, Emmerdale would have a clean sweep of pretty much every award. It’s been head and shoulders above the competition throughout the year, and could fill the majority most categories if they allowed multiple nominees per Soap in all categories – not just one from each show.

I’m quite glad that James got shortlisted for Best Actor, and based on the longlist, I would have also shortlisted Warren. If Danny-Boy Hatchard was up for Best Actor, I might have made him take Warren’s place.
I know that the EastEnders Best Actor nominees are quite weak, but I thought Danny Dyer was gonna get shortlisted again, because of how popular he is.
I also think that Ronnie and Roxy’s Exit should have been nominated for Best Episode instead of Lee on the Edge.
I do hope Kym Marsh wins Dramatic Female Performance. She was brilliant in the Stillbirth Storyline.
If John Middleton does not win anything, then I will give up with the British Soap Awards!
EastEnders has been awful this year, and I don’t think it deserves anything.

May 12, 2017 at 12:33 pm #1202091241I hope Eastenders gets wiped out. It’s the only soap I watch but the current Exec Producer is running it into the ground. My only hope is for the show to get nothing here leading to O’Connor getting the Lorraine Newman treatment and announcing his departure within a few months.
