Okay I’m looking for examples of characters who have been on their soap for years or decades and seem to always get ignored by the writing team.

Characters who just never seem to get a front burner storyline anymore despite at one point being a lead character on their show.

Here is one that comes to mind:

Elizabeth on GH: In the early 2000’s it seemed as though Elizabeth was being groomed to become the show’s next leading lady and then slowly but surely it seemed that her reign had sort of ended. She would still show up on canvas; usually to support another character or drive someone else’s storyline; but she rarely (if ever) had her own storylines anymore.

Renee Jones as Lexie Carver on Days. The writers had her character so back and forth throughout the 90’s. Towards the end of the 90’s and early 2000’s she was a lead, then it was back and forth again, and she really had potential to shine with little Theo’s Autism storyline, but they just couldn’t seem to know a good storyline when it was right in front of them, and chose to backburn her and only pay attention to the storyline maybe once a week. Such a shame.

Doug Davidson (Paul, Y&R); he has been on the show since 1978. His character went from being a private detective to chief of police. He has ties to many characters. We never seen him anymore and the writers just kind of dropped his character. According to Doug’s Twitter page, he’s no longer on the show (which would explain why we never see him). I’m not sure if he was let go or if he quit. Either way, it’s sad that this talented actor who delivers each and every time will longer be on. He’ll be missed.

I remember at one point they fired Rebecca Herbst, but the fan outrage was so huge they had no choice but to keep her on the show.

Throughout the 2000s, DAYS did a bad job of positioning the people who felt like they should be the heirs to the big stories, most particularly Carrie, Belle, and Shawn. All three were let go from the show at changes in headwriter (of which there were many), and while Belle and Shawn have been back sporadically, they still don’t seem as prominent as they should be. It’s been great seeing them have story lately, but they haven’t been transitioned much past their entanglements with Phillip and Jan in terms of having their own stories. Carrie’s been brought back for a couple of stints, but really has been ignored in large part. Now Christie Clark is living in the U.K., so it seems like the character coming back full-time might be a pipe dream at this point.

Realistically this is ANY General Hospital character not Sonny, Jason, or Carly since basically the last 20 years…

I would add that I think they have done a poor job with Deidre Hall’s Marlena on Days – yes, she gets storyline but it’s almost always the SAME storylines, kidnappings and near death experiences in outlandish plots. I would like to see her given a chance to shine in a more realistic dramatic (rather than melodramatic) storyline.
