Michael Fairman, among others, has reported that Michelle Stafford is leaving General Hospital and returning to her signature role of Phyllis on The Young and the Restless. Gina Tognoni will be leaving the role she has played for the past 5 years. I have been hoping for this all this time and it is finally happening!
One of the things I have missed on Y&R is the wonderful chemistry between Christian LeBlanc’s Michael and his best gal pal Phyllis, but he only has chemistry with MS and not at all with GT. While others thought Gina was great int he role I found her to have a lack of humor in her portrayal. I hope this also means that Nina will learn that Sasha is not her child and it will be the end of Nina and Valentin.
No word yet on final air dates for either actress.March 31, 2019 at 5:31 am #1202835028
I can really go for this. Nina is really an unneeded character on GH and a lot of the reason she was brought in (Silas, Nathan, even Kiki) doesn’t exist. She keeps getting written into corners like with this Valentin business and the way she “parents” Charlotte is horrible to watch as it erodes any empathy I have for her. The actress deserves better.March 31, 2019 at 5:43 am #1202835049
I was stunned by this. I was so used to Gina T. Part of me is NOT happy about this.March 31, 2019 at 9:53 pm #1202835789
This is wonderful news for Stafford and for Y&R. It never felt like Gina Tognoni was playing the same character that Stafford did, in so many ways, and it’ll be great for the show to have that character back. I was at the point where I didn’t think this would ever happen.
Nina felt so unnecessary on GH after her first few months, for a few years. But I like having her around now, and I wouldn’t terribly mind if they recast the part.April 1, 2019 at 4:38 am #1202835971
It does seem like a bit of a no-brainer for Michelle to return to the role she is so iconic for and that made her a star, and I’m sure we all knew it would happen at some point.
As for Nina, I think with many of the current GH characters (coughsilascough) she is basically pointless. I know I would certainly not bother recasting her.April 1, 2019 at 5:31 am #1202836010
Agreed. Especially since I’m sure Stafford isn’t cheap for GH, we could stand to get some more people on contract. I would love to get Kelly Thiebaud back!April 1, 2019 at 2:20 pm #1202836495
Nina is going to have to be recast because the character is in the middle of a major storyline. I vote on Cady McClain as a Nina recast.April 1, 2019 at 5:41 pm #1202836623
I don’t know about that. GH is mastering the art of writing a character out seemingly out of nowhere, in just an episode or two. They could probably wrap things cleanly enough to get Nina out of Port Charles by the time Michelle’s contract runs out, if they wanted to. Although, I agree that there are other priorities to consider, like getting some of these people on contract or perhaps luring back some people who aren’t on currently (Nikolas, Britt, Hayden).April 1, 2019 at 7:41 pm #1202836736
All they have to do is have Valentin’s lies blow up which considering how poorly kept they are at the moment won’t take much. She could have a breakdown or just ditch town. It’s not like she’s central to a mystery. Her storyline is about a woman being callously manipulated. There’s a ready made rip cord to pull.May 4, 2019 at 1:18 am #1202879465
will they ever bring back as the world turns and guilding lightMay 5, 2019 at 5:52 pm #1202881262
What do you guys think about the news that Cynthia Watros is replacing Stafford as Nina?May 5, 2019 at 6:09 pm #1202881300
Cynthia Watros is very good, so I think it was a good move… except for the fact that I have no idea why they are continuing with the character of Nina.May 6, 2019 at 9:35 am #1202882525
Great to hear from you again, robbalto!
I agree, I think Cynthia Watros is a good choice for Nina, but also agree that it’s surprising they’re keeping the character. News at the time made it sound like Stafford was in contract talks with GH down to the wire, so I assumed that she only had a few more days to tape. But apparently she is still taping, which means the show had plenty of time to satisfactorily wrap up her stories and shuffle her character off. I’m fine with her still being around, as I do like Nina, but it seems like a strange decision.
