Since we were talking about it earlier, I dug up the table I made last year comparing WGA and Emmy winners by year.  As I recalled, the two award winners rarely matched up.  The last time was in 2006, when Y&R won both awards, and the last time before that was back in 1997, when AMC tied with Y&R for an Emmy win and won the WGA award outright.  But we’re currently in the longest stretch we’ve ever seen without the two awards agreeing, so that could bode well for GH with their recent win.  Also worth noting: of the nine times the awards have matched, five of those wins were by Ryan’s Hope, and one was by Santa Barbara.  Of the soaps still remaining on air, each soap other than DAYS has won both awards in the same year just once, GH in 1995, AMC in 1997 and Y&R in 2006.  So, the correlation between the two is barely any better than random chance over the last 20 or so years.

I tried pasting the table below, and hopefully it actually shows up.

Yes, thank you for posting this chart, EmmyLoser! Very interesting that there is so little correlation. I would venture to guess that the Daytime Emmy voters are more familiar with (and thus influenced by) the work as a whole, while the WGA is more inclined to judge the specific merit of the episode submitted.

Also interesting is that the east coast soaps really dominated both of these awards. I do not find this surprising, as I feel the east coast shows often had more substance than the west coast shows.

I think this year’s writing award will be a showdown between GH and B&B. But anyone who is daytime-savvy knows that B&B’s episode is part of a bigger (and groundbreaking) story, while GH’s is an incredibly strong one-off. (I’m making some assumptions there in regard to the episodes they will submit.)

Thanks, guys.  I was happy to do it.

I think the only way to really know what scripts were submitted would be to find out from someone in the WGA.  Maybe there’s a poster on here who could give us some insight?

Yes, great list EmmyLoser!!  I learned recently that for the WGA awards,
the judges only receive the scripts alone, and not the actual episode tapes, so
they are only judging the words and story, rather than production, acting
etc.  This is not something that I realized
before, so this might add to the discrepancy between why the awards don’t often
correlate.  I know for the Daytime Emmys
writing award, they submit the actual episode and not the scripts, so this
makes sense, as what’s on a page and how it translates onto screen is often
quite different.  As for submission, it
was confirmed by Daytime Confidential and Michael Fairman that they submitted
the April 1 Anniversary script as one of their scripts, but it is not yet known
what the other 2 scripts submitted are.
