It’s interesting to see how many years the lineup was always Peter Bergman, Tony Geary, David Canary and Eric Braeden. Of the four, I think Eric Braeden definitely deserves more than one Emmy. All of them are great. I wish Bob Woods also had at least one more, especially from the late 90s for Drew’s death and Nora’s affair with Sam. (I loved that triangle when Kale Browne played Sam.) The part of my brain that says “spread the wealth” has some issues with Tony Geary having so many Emmys, but he certainly deserves them.
My biggest issue with this category is that Jon Hensley was only nominated once. I always thought he was extremely underrated. I liked his subtlety, genuineness and romantic appeal. I have similar feelings about Robert Newman (in fact both characters and actors remind me of each other). I would have given Newman an Emmy for the clone storyline; he took that material and ran with it and him and Joy Lenz made that whole story work for me.
I’m so glad John McCook finally won last year! I had a similar feeling when James Reynolds and Doug Davison won.
It’s weird to me that Thaao Penghlis has been nominated twice. To me he hasn’t been a lead actor since the 90s. And I think he’s fine but definitely not nomination-worthy.
Would be nice if Ricky Paul Goldin had won once.
I miss Billy Miller as Y&R’s Billy. I’ve never enjoyed Jason Thompson’s version. Thompson should have won for GH, not Y&R.
Michael Zaslow… what an actor!
ReplyCopy URLYeah, there is a period where the Daytime Emmys in general was very repetitive with its nominations, and that’s reflected very strongly in this category.
The James Reynolds win in this category always makes me emotional. I remember him saying, years and years ago, that his goal was to someday win a lead actor Emmy for Days of our Lives, and I thought there was no way it would ever happen. While I have a lot of respect for Anthony Geary, I definitely think some of those Emmys would have been better placed with actors who hadn’t won as many and deserved wins as well.

Geary winning 8 is ridiculous. I would be agreeable to his wins for 1998, 1999 and 2011, but that would be it.
Some actors who somehow never got nominated that come quickly to my mind are Christopher Bernau for GL, Anthony Herrera for ATWT, Mark Pinter for AW – I am sure there are others but I would have to think about it.
It is disappointing that Grant Aleksander never won for his work as Phillip on GL.
