ReplyFebruary 16, 2023 at 6:59 pm #1205306386Thanks for posting! I have two MAJOR problems with this category. The first is the fact that Beverlee McKinsey was never nominated for playing Alexandra on “Guiding Light” (and she should have one). The second one is that Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki, Y&R) has only been nominated once. She is one of the most underrated actresses on daytime and consistently delivers. She should have at least two Emmys in my opinion.

– I never understood how Bobbie Eakes managed to get several nominations for her mehhhh role on All My Children.
– I wish Colleen Zenk had at least one Emmy. Same with Alison Sweeney, who also should have more nominations.
– I remember my WTF when Nicole Forrester was nominated for “Guiding Light”. I absolutely hated the Josh/Cassie pairing.
– It’s interesting how many repeat nominees/winners in this category.
– It’s unbelievable to me that Robin Strasser was not nominated as Dorian (OLTL) since 1985. I wonder if she would have won more Emmys if she had submitted for Supporting on a few of the years when she wasn’t lead.
– 1997 was one of the best years for this category. Any of the actresses deserved it. I was torn between Eileen Davidson and Cynthia Watros. I remember how much I loved Cynthia’s acceptance speech and Joe Mascolo presenting it to her.
– I miss Stephanie so much on B&B! Susan Flannery was one of a kind!February 17, 2023 at 3:00 am #1205306546Thanks for posting! I have two MAJOR problems with this category. – I miss Stephanie so much on B&B! Susan Flannery was one of a kind! You are spot on. Strasser always stated that she was a lead actress and rightfully, never allowed herself to be pigeon holed into supporting. However her last two years on the show before cancellation, Robin did submit in Supporting.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 17, 2023 at 10:44 am #1205306752McKinsey only submitted herself once for GL and she wasn’t nominated that year. Though of course, she should have won one at some point in her career.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 17, 2023 at 10:58 am #1205306762I wonder if Alison Sweeney was generally a poor submitter in terms of material. She felt like a possible frontrunner in 2009 with the baby switch storyline, but instead of submitting some of the emotional material around the pain and losses in that storyline, she submitted confrontational scenes from the storyline climax that were well played but really didn’t hold a candle to her work earlier in the year.
As much as we discuss it, it is still surprising that Robin Strasser hasn’t been nominated since 1985. Almost as surprising is that Deidre Hall hasn’t been nominated since then either. Their last nominations came in the same year.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 17, 2023 at 1:31 pm #1205306995Hmmm… about Deidre Hall. I have a weird thing with her. I absolutely love her and I love Marlena, but I don’t think she stands out as much as other actresses. She seems to always have a “wooden-ness” about her, and uses the same tone of voice, and I don’t find her performances very rich or textured. And yet I’ve grown accustomed to that and I feel it’s part of the character and I love her.
Which years would you have nominated her?
(One thing I love about her is her chemistry with Chandler Massey and Alison Sweeney.)
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 20, 2023 at 9:41 am #1205310999There’s definitely a certain rigidity in Marlena that’s always been a part of the character, textually so, which is part of what made the Marlena/Roman pairing so popular. So I think Deidre stands out the most when Marlena is pushed to extremes or essentially not herself or Deidre gets to play an alternate version of the character. I know Eileen Davidson was the standout, but I felt Deidre also deserved a nomination or two for her work in the later 90s during the Marlena/John/Kristen triangle. The field was very crowded then, of course. She also did tremendous work during both possession storylines (quite different, though), and I would definitely have nominated her for 2021. I would also have nominated her for 2017, when she was playing both Marlena and Hattie, and for the year that John died, which I think was 2008 maybe.

– I miss Stephanie so much on B&B! Susan Flannery was one of a kind!Nicole Forrester was good as Cassie in 2007. Her scenes were centered around Tammys death and how Cassie confronted Alan for causing the death. In my humble opinion Forrester was my pick to win. Coopers reel wasn’t good as Katherine telling Jill she gave her baby away which never happened. Even though I love Cooper I thought Forrester had the better reel.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 21, 2023 at 4:31 pm #1205312783^My two cents about 2007: I absolutely would have voted for and was rooting for Maura West as Carly on ATWT – I think that was her best year from all the years she was nominated, the year Carly thought she was dying. She was also beyond superb in her first year or so on the show where she might have been eligible for Younger Actress (1995-96 – I am thinking of the scenes where she lost Mike’s baby in particular).
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 22, 2023 at 10:27 am #1205313836In 2007, I had of course watched DAYS throughout the year and otherwise had watched ATWT for much for much of the year. I remember Maura West being great throughout the year, coming off a best actress win the previous year, but I also remember disliking a lot of her storyline and the way things shaking out, both with the Jack being with Katie and basically treating Carly like garbage and constantly not believing her and the whole thing of Carly being near death only for it to turn out she’d be fine. But when I watched the reels, I thought Nicole Forrester’s was even better than Maura’s. I didn’t watch GL, and so while I knew people were mad that Forrester got nominated, and as a lead no less, when Laura Wright could never get a nom as Cassie, I had no notions about it myself. I was really impressed by her performance, and she and Maura were easily top two. Crystal Chappell’s reel was good as well. I remember the Y&R ladies both having fairly weak reels. If I’m remembering my year’s correctly, Michelle Stafford’s just felt kind of light. A lot of conversations with people around town and kind of shocking as a submission. I don’t recall if the other episode she submitted was one of the numerous confrontations with Sharon over Nick (there were so many) or the time when Stafford was playing both Phyllis and a face-altered Sheila, which was not very good, largely because the show, at least in that episode, had Phyllis behaving like she’d had a lobotomy in order to play up the contrast between Sheila and Phyllis. But I think that may have been the year before. Jeanne Cooper’s reel was, sadly, the weakest of the bunch for me. I don’t remember the Katherine/Jill episode all that well, but I remember thinking it was fine. The other episode was Katherine and Amber trapped in the rubble of some disaster event, and again, I could not believe anyone would have submitted this episode. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as jaded as when Cooper ended up winning that Emmy, even though I love Jeanne Cooper and wanted her to have an Emmy.
