Before the Daytime Emmys got their own ceremony the Primetime Emmys gave Emmys to Daytime TV. In 1972 Nbcs The Doctors (Allen Potter, EP) won the first Emmy for Best Drama Series. In 1973 CBS’ The Edge of Night (Erwin Nicholson, EP) won Best Drama Series and Mary Fickett won Individual Performer for her role as Ruth Parker Brent on All My Children.

In 1974 The first Daytime Emmys were given their own award ceremony. NBC’s The Doctors won Best Drama Series (Joseph Stuart, EP) (I would love to know what episodes they picked for their submission). In 1975 CBS’ The Young and The Restless (Bill Bell and John Conboy, EP) won Best Drama Series (If anyone knows their submission please tell me). In 1976 NBCs Another World (Paul Rauch, EP) won Best Drama Series (I was once told what their Emmy submission was that year but I forgot). In 1977 ABCs Ryan’s Hope (Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer, EPs) won Best Drama Series (Someone please tell me what their submission was). In 1978 NBC’S Days of Our Lives (Betty Corday and Wes Kenny, EPs) won Best Drama Series (I heard a recording on YouTube but I couldn’t tell who was talking on the clips). In 1979 Ryan’s Hope (Claire and Paul) won their second Emmy for Best Drama Series (I’m curious about what they picked for their submission).

In 1980 CBS’ Guiding Light (Allen Potter, EP) won Best Drama for Roger and Rita in the hall of mirrors episode. In 1981 ABC’s General Hospital (Gloria Monty, EP) won Best Drama Series for what looked like Luke and Laura having an intimate conversation while they were on the Run. In 1982 Guiding Light (Potter) won their second Emmy for best drama series (I definitely want to know what their submission was maybe Kelly and Morgan’s wedding or Diane Ballard’s murder). In 1983 The Young and The Restless (Bell and Conboy) won their second Emmy for Best Drama Series (another submission I’d like to know). In 1984 General Hospital (Monty) won their second Emmy for Best Drama Series (I want to know what their submission was. Was it Susan’s murder?). In 1985 and 1986 The Young and The Restless won back to back Emmys for Best Drama Series (Bell, Ed Scott, and Tom Langan). I’m not sure what their 1985 submission was but their 1986 submission was Jack daydreaming about Victor shooting him after he catches Jack in bed with Nikki. In 1987 CBS’As The World Turns (Robert Calhoun, EP) won Best Drama Series (I don’t know what their submission was but I think one of them might have been Doug Cummings murder ?). In 1988, 1989, and 1990 Santa Barbara (Bridget and Jerome Dobson, Jill Phelps, and John Conboy, EPs) won Best Drama Series three years in a row. I’m not sure what they submitted in 87 but their 88 submission must have had something to do with Eden’s rape. Their 1990 submission was 1989s Christmas episode of Cruz feeling as if he has nothing to live for and he embarks on a dreamlike journey through town.

In 1991, As The World Turns (Laurence Caso) won their second Emmy for Best Drama Series. I wonder if they picked Margo pulling the plug on Casey for their submission? In 1992 ABC’s All My Children (Felicia Behr, EP) won Best Drama Series (Does anyone know what reel they picked?). In 1993 The Young and The Restless (Bell, Scott, Wiard, and Shaughnessy) won Best Drama Series (I wonder did they pick Shelia burning up the barn with her mom and Lauren trapped in there?). In 1994 All My Children (Behr) won their second Best Drama Series Emmy (I once heard they picked Terrence Frye being the subject of a racial slur or Grace kidnapping Mimi’s baby). In 1995, 1996, and 1997 General Hospital (Wendy Richie) won Best Drama three years in a row. I know their 1995 submission was BJs death and Maxie receiving her heart. 1996 was Stone’s death and I have no clue what 1997s reel could have been. In 1998 All My Children (Francesca James, EP) won their 3rd Emmy for Best Drama Series. I heard Maria’s plane crash was their reel. In 1999 General Hospital (Richie) won Best Drama Series for their powerful take of Elizabeth’s rape and Luke and Laura reliving the tale of Luke raping Laura.

In 2000 General Hospital won Best Drama Series (Richie) (I’m not sure what their submission was though). In 2001 As The World Turns (Chris Goutman, EP) won their 3rd Best Drama Series award for David Stenbecks funeral and Lily and Rose find out their sisters. In 2002 One Life To Live (Gary Tomlin, EP) won Best Drama Series for Rae Cummings has a dream that everyone in town has switched personalities and Nora admits that she pushed Colin to his death on the witness stand. In 2003 As The World Turns (Gotman) won their 4th Best Drama Series Emmy (I was watching all 2002 and I have no clue what episodes they picked. Maybe Jake’s death or something). In 2004 The Young and The Restless won 6th Emmy for best drama series for Kevin setting fire Gina’s restaurant. In 2005 and 2006 General Hospital (Jill Phelps, EP) won back to back Emmys for Best Drama Series for 2004s hotel fire and 2005s train wreck. In 2007 Guiding Light (Ellen Wheeler, EP) and The Young and The Restless (Lynn Latham, EP) tied for Best Drama Series. GL picked Jonathan being haunted by his sins and Dinah and Mallet’s non wedding and Y&R picked a standalone episode of how Carmen Mesta was murdered and Phyllis gives birth in a elevator during a snowstorm. In 2008 General Hospital (Phelps) won best Drama Series for the Metro court hostage situation. In 2009 The Bold and The Beautiful (Brad Bell, EP) won Best Drama Series for Storm taking his own life so Katie can get his heart.

In 2010 and 2011 The Bold and The Beautiful (Bell) won Best Drama Series for 2009s Ann Douglas’ passing saga and 2010s Skid Row saga with Brooke, Stephanie, and Daiyzee. In 2012 General Hospital (Phelps) won for the death of Jake and Jocelyn got his Kidney. In 2013 Days of Our Lives (Ken Corday, EP) won their second Emmy for Best Drama Series for Daniel confronting Nicole about when her unborn baby died and The DAYSsaster episode where the town is leveled by an underground explosion. In 2014 The Young and The Restless (Jill Phelps, EP) won their 8th best drama Emmy for Delia’s death and the Christmas episode of what Delia’s life could have been if she’d lived. In 2015 Days (Corday) and Y&R (Phelps) tied for best drama series. Days won for Sami grieving over a dead EJ and Will and Sonny’s wedding. Y&R chose Billy confronting Adam for killing Delia and the aftermath. In 2016 and 2017 General Hospital (Frank Valentini, EP) won back to back Emmys for 2015s black and white episode of Luke Spencer and how he killed both his parents and the nutcracker gala episode and 2016s episodes of Alexis and Julian’s wedding and hostage takeover and Sonny saving the day. In 2018 Days of Our Lives (Corday) won their 4th Emmy for Best Drama Series for JJ accidentally shooting Theo and The double wedding of Sonny and Paul and Abigail and Chad. In 2019 The Young and The Restless (Mal Young, EP) won their 10th Best Drama Series Emmy for JT abusing Victoria and Nikki hitting JT over the head with a fireplace stick.

From those early years I have seen all of The Doctors episodes during 1971-72 and 1973-74 and all of the episodes of Ryan’s Hope for 1976-77 and 1978-79. I recently watched all of the episodes of Guiding Light from 1979-80 on YouTube! The Doctors was strong from 1967-69 and then from 1971-75 in particular. The early years of Ryan’s Hope were amazing!

I found it most surprising that All My Children didn’t win until it’s 17th nomination and won all 3 of its awards in the 1990’s.

I wish As the World Turns had won for all of the Douglas Marland years! I found Santa Barbara wildly uneven during it’s heyday, including the 3 years in a row that it won.

Loving ought to have been nominated for 1995-96 on the strength of it’s farewell Loving murders storyline.

One Life To Live was way better than it’s rare few nominations and only 1 win ever.

Another World was superb between 1985-96 and then started to go downhill from 1997-99. It ought to have fared better.

The Edge Of Night was brilliant from 1979-83 – truly great soap!

I know for certain that AMC submitted Terence Frye’s being attacked as one of their submissions for 1994.

The fact that General Hospital won for the Nutcracker episode as one of it’s two submissions for 2016 gives me hope it can win this year despite the 2nd episode being the Christmas Carol episode.

Some of the Y&R winning submissions were excruciating imo.

Just hoping either Days or GH wins this year.

What did Y&r pick for their 1983 and 85 wins?

I think one of the 2003 ATWT tapes was a standalone Musical Valentine’s Day episode.
