Some of my least favorite: Tamara Braun as Ava (Days, 2009, which I think in general was a weak year), Jessica Collins, Natalia Livingston

– I can’t believe Kathryn Hays (ATWT) was never nominated.
– I would do anything to go back to 1996 and give the Emmy to Tonya Lee Williams for the storyline involving the HIV scare and Nate’s affair.
– 1998 was a great year. I would have gone for Amy Ecklund, but all actresses were really deserving that year.
– I really wish Renee Elise Goldsberrry, Jacklyn Zeman, Kathy Brier, Beth Ehlers, Darlene Conley and Lisa LoCicero had at least one win.
– Gina Tognoni was so great as Dinah on GL.
– I’ve always thought Heather Tom’s better role was Victoria on Y&R rather than Katie on B&B.February 16, 2023 at 5:07 pm #1205306264^^The Tonya Lee Williams comment is an example of what you’d do if you could go back and just change the result of particular race, but if you could choose one nominee who never won and give her an Emmy, who would it be? I agree that it’s a shame the women you listed never got a win, though Lisa LoCicero (and I guess technically Jackie Zeman) certainly still could. Renee Elise Goldsberry should have a Daytime Emmy and a Primetime Emmy for Girls 5Eva.
Is there anyone out there who thinks Katie on B&B is a better role for Heather Tom than Victoria on Y&R? Despite all the award-winning performances Tom has given as Katie, it’s hard for me not to wonder what might have been had Tom continued as Victoria or resumed the role, possibly even after playing Katie. Of course, Heather Tom vacating the role of Victoria (along with David Tom no longer playing Billy) is what opened the door for the Victoria/Billy pairing, which seems like Victoria’s most significant romantic pairing.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 16, 2023 at 6:48 pm #1205306363I do hope you’re right and Lisa LoCicero can win one in the future! Sadly I doubt they will ever give Jacklyn Zeman enough material.
To answer your question, if I could choose one nominee who never won and give her an Emmy, I will say one in general (as in, career achievement) and one for a specific year. For the former, I think I choose Kathy Brier. For the latter, I go for Tonya Lee Williams. 🙂 I really think that’s one of the top daytime performances in a story ever.
On Heather Tom, as much as I like Amelia Heinle in the role, I was obsessed with Heather Tom’s Victoria, especially because I loved her chemistry with Eric Braeden. But Amelia really was a great recast. There was another actress that they brought in between the two of them who was really miscast. As for Katie, I just find the character to be a bit bland.

I would respectfully disagree. No doubt Parkers submitted an outstanding showcase and very much deserved the win that year. I would site Kathleen Noone of AMC submissions dealing with Mark’s drug addiction as being in a another universe.Susan Haskell’s reels with her gang rape storyline ( technically she was a lead but to old to compete in Younger Lead Actress ) were off the charts.

Victoria Newman was the role at the time. Y&R courted Gina Tognoni for the part when Heather Tom left. Ironic that years later Gina would end up playing Phyllis. Tognoni was the actress in demand. She was GH’s second choice to replace Sarah Brown as Carly when she vacated the role. The first choice was Robin Christopher but finally went to the very capable hands of Tamara Braun.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 17, 2023 at 3:27 am #1205306558For me the actress I would have given a Supporting Actress Emmy who never won (and was never even nominated) would be Kathryn Hays as Kim on ATWT. But for actual nominees I would go with Maureen Garrett as Holly on GL and Bree Williamson as Jessica on OLTL – I am still furious she lost to Tamara Braun’s Ava and Julie Pinson and Heather Tom! She should have won at least one of those three years (I didn’t get to see Arianne Zucker’s work in 2009 though and have heard mostly from EmmyLoser that she was great that year, so much so she won the Goldies award from us albeit I think in lead).
I can’t stand Heather Tom. I call her “Miss Crocodile Tears”! (; It’s just one of those minority opinions I have, there is something about her that rubs me the wrong way.
I will never understand how it is that Tamara Tunie (Jessica on ATWT) was never nominated.
Soap Central broke my heart by reporting on the day of the nominations in 2011 (for 2010) that Robin Strasser had finally been nomination again for the first time since 1985 and then it turned out she wasn’t nominated ): (They also left Colleen Zenk off the Best Actress list in their reporting that year and I was extremely happy they were wrong about that!). I never understood her lack of nominations post-1985.
My favorite Gina Tognoni role was actually Kelly Cramer on OLTL and she was never nominated for that role.
For me Anna Holbrook totally deserved her Emmy in 1996. Gawd, how I miss Another World – and all of the New York based soaps!
It is interesting for me how who I was rooting for at the time isn’t necessarily who I would vote for all these years later!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 17, 2023 at 10:46 am #1205306756The “what could have been” of all the potential recastings is so interesting to consider. Y&R wanted Gina Tognoni to play Victoria, but then Heather Tom ended up playing Kelly Cramer for several years before settling into the role of Katie on B&B. It’s very hard to me to love Tom as Katie on B&B mostly because, past the first couple of years and Katie getting Storm’s heart, it has been incredibly apparent that the show doesn’t value Katie as a character. It values her as a means to win Emmys and a device to maneuver Brooke away from Bill, but beyond that, not so much. I can totally picture Tognoni playing early 2000s Carly on GH.
And yes, I will never stop being annoyed that Julie Pinson won that Emmy over Arianne Zucker. Zucker had a sensational year with the baby switch storyline, and I thought Pinson’s reel was, at best, third place, after Zucker and Beth Chamberlin.

No argument here, the ” what could have been casting ” is interesting to no end. Many planned storylines have changed courses due to the writers picking up something unexpected that an actor has/had on & off camera. The role of GL’s Alexandra Spaulding would have been a completely different entity in the hands of Robin Strasser. Strasser was on the verge of accepting the baroness and made no bones about letting OLTL know that she was heading to Springfield until luckily OLTL ( at Slezak’s urging ) brought her back to Llanview. While Marj Dusay was no Beverlee McKinsey ( and who is? ) she made for a terrific Alexandra Spaulding. And sometimes things just don’t work out. ” Loving’s” Christine Tudor had been hired to replace the immensely popular but soon departing Judith Light on OLTL as Karen Wolek. OLTL shifted gears midstream and decided to write the character off the canvass with Light’s exit. ABC gave Tudor Gwenthyn Alden on ” Loving ” as a consolation prize.
But the best ” what could have been casting ” in that it never really happened casting, is AW’s Ellen Wheeler’s. She created two of the most accidental icons in all of daytime without ever auditioning for either Marley Love nor Victoria Hudson.Proctor & Gamble owned both AW & DOOL decided the casting. Wheeler had screen tested for a role on DOOL and P&G offered her instead the role of AW’s Marley a week or two before taping. Original Victoria Lord of OLTL and Daisy Cortlandt of AMC fame, actress Gillian Spencer turned soap scribe, was writing for AW at the time. She created the role of hell cat Victoria Hudson when she noticed Wheeler in the green room in jeans and that she possessed an edge to her that never made it to the screen as Marley. She wanted to explore that side of Wheeler without violating the integrity of the Marley character and therefore birthed the character Victoria Hudson ( Actually the original draft had Donna giving birth to triplets Marley, Victoria and Scott LaSalle ) Nothing in Wheeler’s previous work on the show portended that she’d have the range to kick ass in the role of Victoria, but did she ever. A gamble that paid off. A brilliant, unexpected discovery on the show’s part. As legendary as the roles were, they seem to be cursed for any actress that inhabited the contradictory twins ( with Wheeler and Rhonda Lewin as far as we know, being the exceptions ) Jensen Buchanan, Cynthia Watros and the late Anne Heche have all had their lives impacted when getting behind the steering wheel of a car.
In short, casting is key. Some casting choices over the decades have been wildly successful, while others have been complete washouts.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 20, 2023 at 9:14 am #1205310967Wow, that’s a really interesting story. I didn’t realize that Cynthia Watros had ever played Vickie/Marley, and I’d never even heard of Rhonda Lewin.
I really miss the days when soap writing worked so much in concert with what the actors are doing or what they bring to the table. Or at least I miss seeing it on the two shows I watch, DAYS and GH. DAYS is writing so far ahead of its air dates that the show can’t possibly react in any reasonable way to the audience’s feelings on current storyline. During the TomSell era and for a while after, the writing was very good at anticipating audience reaction, but lately this hasn’t been the case at all. GH seems stubbornly attached to its plans regardless of how audiences feel about certain characters and stories.

Nada Rowand never getting a nomination for Loving was puzzling to me, she was wonderful. Of course Kathryn Hays and also Marie Masters among so many ATWT actresses who were deserving…

I beg to differ, Cynthia Watros was indeed on AW. She filled in for Jensen Buchanan for a week or two. Watros did it as a favor to the casting director. She didn’t want it announced to the press. Anne Heche originally wanted to do it but there was a scheduling conflict. Cynthia Watros has indeed played the role of Vicki Hudson on AW.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 20, 2023 at 12:44 pm #1205311192Yes Cynthia Waltros played Vicki. This was late in the run when Ellen Wheeler had returned to play Marley. It was for a few weeks while Jensen was on leave. She had great chemistry with Tom Eplin (another actor that was more than deserving of at least two Emmys).
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 21, 2023 at 3:36 pm #1205312751Tamara Braun and Jessica Collins deserved both their wins. Braun won for confronting Steve for turning her into this monster that she hates. Thise scenes were riveting and I felt so bad for Ava. Collins omg she won over her competition fair and square as Avery blasted Joe about wanting to be with her and her conversation with Phyllis after the rape.
