The truth is we are all right about who deserved to win – our biases often have to do with which shows we watched more – more so back then when there were so many shows. I know some of you are really hung up on the Emmy reels but for me I remember all the moments and not just the Emmy reel moments. So I think Bree Williamson ought to have won instead of Tamara Braun but they chose TB. I just wish Bree had won an Emmy one of the three years she was nominated; she was phenomenal in her role!

To me it’s not about what show actors on. I always go off the reel. I think I could be a fair judge. Whoever wows me would get my vote.

I would factor in other things. For example there have been several category frauds in the lead acting categories and I would not vote for them when I know they don’t belong in lead. If the award is for the best Emmy reel then that should be the name of the category: “Best Emmy Reel by a Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama Series”. I have always felt that the Emmy reel should be a consideration but not the only consideration in judging for the daytime Emmys.

I think the most fair system would be for nominations to be determined based on the year of work and then winners to be determined based on the reels. It makes sense to want to factor in other things, but going by reels feels like the best way to eliminate personal biases. It’s not foolproof, but I think it helps.

I agree that I’ve definitely felt some people were not in the right category, but category placements are agreed upon by the performer, the show and the awards administration, so if someone were in a category I felt wasn’t the correct one, I wouldn’t hold it against them.

^Louise Shaffer’s Rae’s storyline in 1982-83 was later than the Michael Pavel story – that was in 1981. My memory is that she was involved with Frank but Jillian got in her way…

Amelia Heinles Victoria mourns the lost of Delia.
Amelia Heinles Victoria reminisces about Delia with Billy.

I believe it’s still not public knowledge as to what Heinle submitted the second year of her back-to-back Emmy wins (the scenes you recall surrounding the loss of Delia is what Heinle submitted the year prior, resulting in her first Emmy win). My hunch though is that she submitted the stand-alone episode in which (if my memory serves me correctly) a pregnant Victoria starts going into labor while trapped alone in the storage room of the parking garage. She was phenomenal throughout the entire episode.

the episode Heinle picked for her second win was the October 14, 2014 episode where Victoria and Billy reminisced about Delia on the one-year anniversary of her death. Billy apologized for his behavior over the previous year, but Victoria told him no further apologies were necessary. Victoria visited Kelly and suggested they both let their anger go.

Sorry, I should’ve also been clearer in my post. What I meant to say is that it’s not known what material Heinle had selected for the pre-nom round in 2015 (keep in mind, Emmy voting during that time still consisted of two rounds, the pre-nom and then final round of voting; only recently has the pre-nom round been eliminated and one round of voting determines both the nominees and winners). You are of course right that she submitted scenes centered around the one-year anniversary of Delia’s death, but this was only for the final round of voting that year.

I did a little research though and stumbled upon this neat interview from 4/1/15 (eight years ago… gosh how time flies!) that Heinle did with Soapcentral (I don’t know how I could’ve missed it at the time) and she mentions that part of her pre-nom reel did, in fact, consist of scenes from that stand-alone episode where Victoria gives birth. So, mystery finally solved lol! For the second (final) round of voting, “to keep it simple”, she stuck solely with the scenes from the Delia’s death anniversary show.

I realize that her win came as a surprise to many (Heinle included!) but knowing now what we do about the pre-nom scenes she selected, her win in hindsight makes total sense. She was truly stellar in that episode alone (one of those rare performances that stays with you) and I’m glad she went with her gut and selected those scenes and included them in her pre-nom reel for the, imo, most critical round of voting.

Here is the interview for anyone interested:

I know the pre nom selection used to consist of a 4 minute scene. I’ve seen those episodes you described and I loved them. The pre nom episode gets them the nomination and the full reel gets them the win.

Heinles first win came as a shock because ppl thought Elizabeth Hendrickson would win as the grieving mother but I looked at both reels in 2014 and I related to Heinles reel more than Hendricksons.

I was surprised by Amelia Heinle’s first win, but pleasantly so. I liked her reel much more than Elizabeth Hendrickson’s, but I didn’t think she had a shot to win. If I’m remembering correctly, I had ranked Jane Elliot first that year, followed by Hendrickson and then Heinle. It reminds me a little of Mary Beth Evans’s win in lead actress a couple of years later. Again, I’d ranked her third, but really liked her reel and just didn’t think the judges would go for it over bigger performances.

One point of clarification here: The brief prenom clips were never used to determine nominations. They were only ever used for determining the list of prenominees who would then compete for nominations. In the early days of the prenom system, each show would be allowed to submit two performers per category, which I believe was ostensibly done by a cast vote, but some shows were known to simply choose their two candidates without the cast voting on them. I think it was later expanded to three, as there were fewer and fewer shows, before it was changed to have all daytime performers vote on the overall list of prenoms. But since that was largely just a popularity contest, NATAS introduced the four-minute clip submission that was used until the prenom system was eliminated. But in all the time the prenom system existed, it was only used to whittle down the list of potential nominees that needed to be considered by judges. Then that list of 10 or 18 or 27 or however many performers would go on to be judged for nominations, either in a round that just determined nominees or a round that determined both nominees and winners, depending on the year.
