ReplyCopy URLMarch 23, 2018 at 9:26 am #1202518189What an incredible resource! Thanks for putting all this together.
I don’t think any moment was as exciting for me as seeing DAYS win Drama Series in 2013. It hadn’t happened in so long, and I think people weren’t really expecting it. I certainly wasn’t. I was walking on air afterwards.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 23, 2018 at 11:18 am #1202518265Emmy Loser, I knew once I saw the episodes of the Salem explosion that Days of Our Lives would win best drama. Marlene McPherson and Darrell Ray Thomas Jr wrote those scenes. They were great. The Olympics came on the next week
ReplyCopy URLMarch 24, 2018 at 5:58 pm #1202518642This is such a big topic! I have followed the Daytime Emmys almost since their inception; 1976 was the first year I watched them on television, back when they were broadcast during the day.
For the category of Drama Series, I remember feeling especially gratified when the winner reflected the actual quality of the show that year (albeit, from my biased perspective). A few examples include Y&R in 1985; ATWT in 1987 and 1991; SB in 1988; GH in 1995. Conversely, I remember being puzzled other times, such as when B&B won for three consecutive years or when GH kept winning during the Guza era or when it won for the last two years even though it was awful (again, my subjective response; no offense to fans).
For writing, I remember being upset when Doug Marland did not win for ATWT. However, I was excited when the award went to Pam Long for GL (1990). I was also excited to see Michael Malone and Josh Griffith win for OLTL in 1994 because it was well-deserved yet so unexpected. And of course I was thrilled with Claire Labine’s win for GH in 1995.
For Lead Actor, I remember getting really tired of repeat wins for David Canary and Anthony Geary. My favorite win was Michael Zaslow, whom I loved on Guiding Light.
For Lead Actress, the most memorable win has to be Susan Lucci. The crowd went crazy. I also thought it was cool when Susan Flannery won her second Emmy 25 years after winning her first. I was surprised and disappointed when Ellen Dolan did not win. Hilary B. Smith was a great surprise in 1994. However, I was repeatedly disappointed when Leslie Charleson, Jeanne Cooper, and Elizabeth Hubbard did not win in the 80s and 90s.
There are many others, but those are a few that come to mind. I used to get a box of dark chocolates for the Daytime Emmys and I would have one every time I was disappointed, which was pretty frequent. Nevertheless, the show was a lot of fun back in the day and I looked forward to it every year.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 24, 2018 at 7:42 pm #1202518654I am watching the 1975 episodes of The Doctors and Anna Stuart should have been nominated for Best Actress that year!
For Drama Series, I was happiest when ATWT won, all four times; Ryan’s hope winning twice; when All My Children finally won in 1992; when Days won for 2012 and 2014.
For Lead Actor, I was thrilled when Michael Zaslow finally won, Charles Keating for AW, both Douglass Watson wins for AW, Michael Park’s two wins for ATWT.
For Lead Actress, Robin Strasser’s win in 1982; Marcy Walker’s win in 1989; Hillary B Smith’s win in 1994; Maura West’s wins for ATWT for 2006 and 2009; and Eileen DAvidson’s win for Days for 2013.
For Supporting Actor my all-time favorite win was Stuart Damon’s for 1998. I also loved the wins for Larry Gates in 1985; John Wesley Shipp in 1986; Gregg Marx in 1987; Joanthan Jackson’s two wins; Chad Duell’s win.
For Supporting Actress, Suzanne Rogers in 1979; Francesca James in 1980 (I loved Kelly so much!); Jane Elliot in 1981; Dorothy Lyman in 1982; Louise Shaffer in 1983; Judi Evans in 1984; Beth Maitland in 1985 – they got the early years right! Also the two wins for Julia Barr, Anna Holbrooks’ win in 1996; Genie Francis’s win; Nancy Lee Grahn’s win for 2011; and Kate Mansi’s win last year.
For Younger Actor, Brian Bloom in 85; Andrew Kavovit in 90; Jonathan Jackson’s wins; David Tom for 98; Chandler Massey’s 3 wins; Freddie Smith’s win; and Bryan Craig’s wins
For Younger Actress, Julianne Moore’s win; Anne Heche (who was spectacular as Vicky and Marley on AW); Kimberly McCullough’s wins; Sarah Joy Brown’s wins; Melissa Hayden, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Camryn Grimes, Eden Riegel, Kristin Alderson, and True O’Brien’s wins
ReplyCopy URLMarch 25, 2018 at 1:51 am #1202518696FreemanGriffin I have often wondered this. What scenes did Melissa Hayden win for that spanned from Jan. 93-Jan.94? Was it the court case between Her against Billy and Vanessa? Cause she also win a Soap Opera Digest Award as well. I have no clue what Martha Byrne picked for her 87 reel to win. Tracey E. Bregman also puzzled me for her win. Was it her marriage to Paul or her taunting of Tracy. I want to know do bad what Brian Bloom picked for his 85 win. I have looked online of pictures of him and Beth Maitland (I wondered what scenes she picked as well) at the 85 Daytime Emmy Awards but I can’t find any. I always felt that GH didn’t deserve best drama in 97, 06, 08, or 17. I understand the 1981 (Luke and Laura on the run), 1984 (Susan Morgan murder), 1995 (BJ dies/Maxie gets BJs heart), 1996(Stone dies of HIV), 1999 (Lucky finds out about Luke raping Laura/Liz’s rape), 2000 (Lucky’s death), 2005 (the PC hotel burning), 2012 (Josselyn gets a kidney from Jake/Luke accidentally kills Jake), and 2016 (Jason and Franco square off)but 1997 y&r should have won, in 2006 y&r should have won for Cassie’s death (I think the 2007 win for y&r was a sympathy win even though Phyllis giving birth to summer in a elevator was good drama), 2008 (GL should have won for Tammy’s funeral/The 70th anniversary episode), and 2017 (Y&R should have won for Adam’s death). Somebody in the NATS and the voters are favoring GH in general over the actual reels (I love GH, but I’ve watch Daytime dramas since I was 2 years old on all 3 networks and I know what’s going on). I also don’t understand how Jill Phelps is hated so much (At GL for killing Maureen/her killing Ryan, Bridget, and Frankie/and breaking up Donna and Matt on AW;At OLTL making Dorian run down Jessica and killing her baby/Killing Mitch Hayes; GH for firing Anna Lee/Killing Alan, Tony, Courtney, and Jake (thank God they reversed it); At Y&R killing Delia) but she keeps winning Best Drama by killing fan favs. Another thing is what did Larry Haines (76 & 81), Helen Gallagher (76 & 77), Val Dufour (77), James Pritchett (78), Irene Dailey, Peter Hansen, and Al Freeman Jr (79), Francesca James and Warren Burton (80) Robin Strasser, Anthony Geary, David Lewis, and Dorthy Lyman (82), Dorthy Lyman, Robert S. Woods, Darnell Williams, and Louise Shaffer (83), Larry Bryggman (84), Larry Gates & Darnell Williams (85), LeAnn Hunley (86), Jerry ver Dorn (95), and Camryn Grimes (00) win their Emmys for? I love the Daytime Emmy Awards so much. My favorite moments were watching ATWT win in 01 and 03 (And their writing wins in 01, 02, 04, and 05), Days winning Best Drama in 13 and 15, Susan Lucci winning in 99, Susan Flannery winning in 00, 02, and 03, Martha Bryne, Leslie Kay, Michael E. Knight, Justin Torkildsen, David Canary, and Adrienne Frantz in 2001, Crystal Chappelle in 02, all Jennifer Finnigan’s wins (02-04), Eden Rigels win in 05, Chandler Massey winning in 2012, 13, and 14, Jennifer Landon’s threepeat (2006-08), Tom Pelphreys two wins (06 and 08) Kim Zimmer’s 2006 win, Gina Tognonis 2006, 08, and 17 wins, Maurice Bernard’s 03 win, Jonathan Jackson’s 2011 and 12 wins, Darrin Brook’s win in 09, Eileen Davidson winning in 2014, all Billy Miller’s wins (10, 13, and 14), Scott Clifton’s wins in 10, 13, and 17, all Heather Tom’s wins (93,99, 11, 12, and 13), Vincent Irizarry and Jeff Brandon tying for supporting Actor in 09, all B&Bs best drama wins from 09-11, Benjamin Hendrickson’s 2003 win, Greg Rikaart, David Lago, and CJL winning in 05, All Erika Slezaks wins (84, 86, 92, 95, 96, and 05), Eric Martsolf winning in 14, Hunter Kings wins in 14 and 15, Freddie Simths win in 15, Y&R and Days tying for best drama in 15, GL and Y&R tying for best drama in 07, Maura West’s wins (07, 10, and 15), Mary Beth Evans, Tyler Christopher, and True O’briens wins in 16, and Chad Duells 15 win were my favorite moments.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 25, 2018 at 1:54 am #1202518697I hear they use to use the same reel to judge drama, writing, and directing from 74-8?. And when did they stop letting reels qualify from Jan-Jan?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 25, 2018 at 4:43 am #1202518706Unless they have changed the rules this year they can use different reels in the Series, Directing and Writing categories.
Melissa Hayden won for 1993-94, before they changed it to a Calendar year for the last 2/3 of 1997. My memory is that it was the custody battle storyline and she was terrific, as was Maeve Kinkead.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 26, 2018 at 12:22 am #1202519117I don’t think I’ll ever get over Laura Wright winning over Michelle Stafford in 2011. That hurt like hell. Jonathan Jackson deserved all his wins. Heather Tom did too. I wish they would give her strong material like they use to. Katie’s a good character. I wish Katherine Kelly Lang would get some heartfelt scenes and submit them and win the freaking Emmy. She’s overdue for a win. So is Melody Thomas Scott, Kristian Alfonso, Deidre Hall, Kassie Depiva, John McCook, Don Diamont, and Bryan Dattilo who should have gotten a nomination this year.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 26, 2018 at 12:25 am #1202519120And I hate how Y&R hasn’t given Christian LeBlanc and Tracey Bregman a storyline. That sucks. Come on Mal Young. I would love to see Leslie Charleston get a storyline instead if her being a featured player in other people’s storyline.
