I also liked the system of each show submitting two or three performers, but I think it was kind of problematic because it got to the point where most actors were only really familiar with the work of other actors they had scenes with. Some actors watch their shows, but I think many of them don’t, especially not outside their own storylines, so they’d be flying blind in terms of picking pre-noms. The show could just put forward who they want, but I don’t really like the thought of that (though that is what DAYS used to do anyway, and probably other shows).April 17, 2021 at 8:56 am #1204205251
I was looking at the history of the nominations and found a small group of actors and actresses who have been nominated 5 or more times and never won the Emmy.
5 nominations: Beth Ehlers as Harley Cooper on Guiding Light – one Best Actress nomination (2015; lost to Kim Zimmer)…
Beth Ehlers’s Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy nomination came in 2006.
She was nominated with All My Children’s Bobbie Eakes, The Bold and the Beautiful’s Susan Flannery, General Hospital’s Kelly Monaco and, the category’s winner, Guiding Light cast mate Kim Zimmer.April 17, 2021 at 9:32 am #1204205273
^She was nominated IN 2006 but FOR 2005. I used the calendar year they were nominated for once the eligibility period was changed to calendar years.April 24, 2021 at 7:37 pm #1204220219
I think it’s very interesting to note The Young and the Restless only got one best actress nomination throughout the 80s and it was for Jeanne Cooper in 1989! Then she was nominated all the time in the 90’s along with Jess Waltons 2 and one for MTS in 1999. Then michelle stafford took over
Wasn’t it possible that MTS kept losing the intrashow votes to Walton Cooper Stafford?
The 80’s thing is the most interesting. Y&R could not get into that category for anythingApril 25, 2021 at 3:29 am #1204220545
^I can’t think of any Y&R actresses who deserved to be nominated in the 1980’s??? For me it was certain ATWT actresses who truly deserved nominations: Kathryn Hays (Kim), Margaret Colin (Margo), Hillary B Smith (Margo), Colleen Zenk (Barbara)April 25, 2021 at 2:48 pm #1204222388
This post made me quite nostalgic hehehe. It’s really sad that James Mitchell passed away without an Emmy, but I sort of understand given the competition during those years. It would have been nice for Beth Ehlers to have gotten a Supporting Actress Emmy at some point in the late 90s or early 2000s. I always loved the character of Harley Davidson Cooper and the mixture of spunk and vulnerability that Beth Ehlers managed so well. Harley might in fact be one of my favorite soap characters ever (and I loved her pairings with Philip –before they ruined the character– and Gus). I hope Joshua Morrow gets an Emmy soon. It’s been so great to watch him grow up on the show over the last two decades. He is now in many ways the heart and soul of a show that used to be my favorite but that I think has been driven to the ground by successive bad regimes. Not a big fan of either Melissa Clare Egan or Thorsten Kaye. Unfortunately I think in both cases it’s because I don’t like their characters that much. They seem like good performers, but their insufferable characters make it tough. A little bit off topic, but I will never understand how Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki, Y&R) has only been nominated ONCE in her entire career. A total travesty, in my opinion.
unpopular opinion but I think MTS is just an ok actressApril 25, 2021 at 8:21 pm #1204226193

I was just wondering because that was defintiely MTS peak era right and so therefore it would have made sense to have her be nominated then probably. Like lucci was all the time. Plus Cooper was on the showApril 26, 2021 at 7:40 am #1204228792
It’s certainly possible that MTS was losing the in-house vote during the pre-nom era, especially given what’s been said about the clique-y nature of the Y&R cast. Seems like everyone loved and respected Jeanne Cooper, and Michelle Stafford was definitely part of the in crowd at the show. MTS may have been on somewhat equal popularity footing with Walton (and this is not even considering others who may have been vying for lead consideration during that time like Eileen Davidson and Sharon Case), but it also seems a little to me like MTS was not super popular among the cast. But I think it’s also true that a lot of the people of the impression that Frank2803 expressed, that MTS is just an okay actress.
