Awful news: Chandler Massey (Will) and Freddie Smith (Sonny) are both exiting Days Of Our Lives. Not date yet on their last air dates ): This is a nail in the coffin for me personally – all of my favorite gay couples are being cut from daytime shows ): Not happy about this at all ):February 13, 2020 at 7:47 am #1203345451
As much as I hate this as well, They were both cut before as well, and came back. Chandler left and was replaced by Guy Wilson, who was then murdered. I am pretty sure that somewhere in that time period, Freddie Smith left for a short period as well, but then came back. So who knows, by 2021 they could be returning to the show. But sounds like Gabi could be leaving too, judging by her post, so there could be some exit storyline where Sonny, Will and Gabi leave together to embark on something?February 13, 2020 at 9:23 am #1203345508
I’ve been so mad about this since yesterday afternoon. I haven’t seen any sort of reasoning for this as of yet, but I think whoever made this decision should have to explain themselves. I don’t love losing Will and Sonny as a couple, but the show has been terrible at writing interesting story for them since Christopher Sean (Paul) left the show. If they felt the need to do something drastic and get rid of one of them (Sonny) to spark storyline for the other (Will), I’d be more understanding. Will is one of the best characters they could have on the show. He’s a legacy character, the son of Sami and Lucas, grandson of Marlena, Kate, and Roman, both a Brady and a Horton. He can be hot-tempered and impulsive, a little reckless even, like his mother, but is ultimately a good person. He just became best friends with the show’s new hero, Ben. Oh, and Chandler has three Emmys in five nominations. DAYS has done a pretty poor job of establishing a younger generation of characters — instead, we have 70-year-olds running around in these dumb action mind-swap stories. It’s ridiculous and infuriating.February 13, 2020 at 10:32 am #1203345582
I mean I wouldn’t call this “devastating.” I thought someone died.February 13, 2020 at 12:57 pm #1203345788
^It’s devastating to me, since the main reasons I have watched Days over the years are for Will and Sami, and they are both going to be gone later this year (with the exception of guest stints, at least for Sami). They film so far ahead that I think it will be awhile before they leave – Alison Sweeney will be returning to the show for a guest stint this summer, perhaps that will be part of the exit story?February 13, 2020 at 4:10 pm #1203346051
Freddie Smith said, I think, we should expect them to last air around September 18th, unless they get more scripts. There’s still time to change their minds!
I’m always inspired by the story of how the show planned to have Marlena killed by the Salem Strangler, but after the episode with Marlena’s strangling aired, fans were LIVID. They picketed the studio until DAYS retconned it to make Marlena’s twin sister Samantha (played by Deidre Hall’s real-life twin sister Andrea) have been pretending to be Marlena, as she was wont to do. (Oh the joys of taping shows shortly before they aired.) The show gave Deidre Hall whatever they needed to for her to stick around a few more years before leaving in a way that didn’t see her die on screen.
Obviously this isn’t nearly on that level, but I feel like if the fans are unhappy, it’s worth being vocal about it now, before it’s altogether too late. All of my efforts in the last 10ish years to get people unfired from DAYS have basically failed (Martha Madison, Christie Clark, Deidre Hall – though I guess that one didn’t last too long). But both GH and Y&R have caved to fan outcry when official or unofficial word broke that they were getting rid of popular actors and characters (Christel Khalil, Genie Francis, and Rebecca Herbst come to mind). Anyway, for those of us who are unhappy with this, I suggest e-mailing producers, tweeting about it, etc.February 14, 2020 at 11:32 am #1203347002
yep. I signed last night. lolFebruary 15, 2020 at 12:37 am #1203347478
If the show were really smart, they’d send Ciara away for awhile and give us the Ben/Will/Sonny triangle! Ben and Will are hot together!February 17, 2020 at 8:37 am #1203349443
^^^YES, that would be fire! That farewell they had in the prison when Ben asked Will to come with them really felt like a moment. (Can you even imagine Ben, Will and Clyde all running around evading recapture?) Though it seems like the Cin fans might go bananas,February 17, 2020 at 8:08 pm #1203350132
I have been saying for years they should’ve made Ben gay. If anyone remembers, when he was the serial killer one of the theories was that he was in love with Will. Maybe I started that theory, but it would have been awesome. Making JJ gay also would be awesome. Now that he doesn’t have a love interest maybe they can do that. The writers are letting all of these great potential storylines go to waste. It’s indicative of the terrible writing Days has had lately.February 18, 2020 at 10:00 am #1203350937
I do remember that being a theory around when Ben was killing people. Ben also always seemed envious of Will and Sonny’s relationship back when he worked for Sonny and would hang out with them from time to time.February 19, 2020 at 4:58 pm #1203352853
From what I remember, the original plan was for Ben to be gay. The show recast the role because Justin Gaston did not want to play that storyline. At least that was the rumor. They scrapped the story once Rob took over.February 20, 2020 at 12:18 am #1203353266
Freddie and Chandler had a fascinating talk about their firing on Freddie’s podcast:
This is really a must-watch video. They take you behind-the-scenes of what happened. It’s really fascinating to hear how the business side of soaps work – or at least in the case of Days.
Also, from the way they were talking about their final days on the show it seems like Will dies.
