With two months to go things could change but I decided to start looking at the subject of who are the leads from each of the four remaining network soaps If you have strong feelings that someone really belongs in lead or support we can discuss it. I am sticking with the four per show that worked well for last year’s Goldies (this isn’t for the Daytime Emmys, where actors often commit category fraud – and sometimes get away with it! – it’s about our yearly Goldies awards here on Gold Derby!)

So here goes – also: it isn’t a discussion of the quality of their acting, only which category they belong in:

    For Lead Actor:

    The Bold and the Beautiful
    SCOTT CLIFTON (Liam)
    DON DIAMONT (Bill)
    THORSTEN KAYE (Ridge)
    INGO RADAMACHER (Thorne)

    Days Of Our Lives
    TYLER CHRISTOPHER (Stefan)
    BILLY FLYNN (Chad)
    ERIC MARTSOLF (Brady)
    CHANDLER MASSEY (Will)

    General Hospital
    MAURICE BENARD (Sonny)
    STEVE BURTON (Jason)
    ROGER HOWARTH (Franco)
    BILLY MILLER (Drew)

    The Young and the Restless
    PETER BERGMAN (Jack)
    ERIC BRAEDEN (Victor)
    JOSHUA MORROW (Nick)
    JASON THOMPSON (Billy)

    For Lead Actress:

    The Bold and the Beautiful
    KATHERINE KELLY LANG (Brooke)
    JACQUELINE MacINNES WOOD (Steffy)
    HEATHER TOM (Katie)

    Days Of Our Lives
    KRISTIAN ALFONSO (Hope)
    CAMILA BANUS (Gabi)
    DEIDRE HALL (Marlena and Hattie)
    MARCI MILLER (Abigail)

    General Hospital
    KELLY MONACO (Sam)
    KIRSTEN STORMS (Maxie)
    MAURA WEST (Ava)
    LAURA WRIGHT (Carly)

    The Young and the Restless
    SHARON CASE (Sharon)
    AMELIA HEINLE (Victoria)
    MISHAEL MORGAN (Hillary)
    GINA TOGNONI (Phyllis)

Now we have just a little more than 1 month to go. These feel right to me; I know not everyone agrees with me about Kirsten Storms – Rebecca Herbst or Michelle Stafford could be one of the four from GH in Lead Actress – my case for Storms was that she had lead material surrounding the death of her husband and then really strong material with her burgeoning relationship with Peter (the wonderful Wesley Ramsay).

I also thought about moving Jon Lindstrom up to Lead Actor from GH but felt that these four GH actors are more solidly leads.

    Any thoughts?

    Freeman if I choose the 5 leading ladies for best actress;

Marci Miller: she had an incredible year with the DID. She was the star of DAYS this year

Amelia Heinle: Amelia did some phenom work with the JT story in the beginning of the year

Gina Tognoni: She has the emmy winning tape with the Summer confrontation. That was amazing work.

Maura West; she is always amazing.

Michelle Stafford: she had the best year of any of the GH ladies. The funeral stuff was amazing and so was so many of her scenes of Nathan’s death. An epic year for Stafford.

I agree with everything other than Kirsten Storms (which we’ve talked about before– really, she could go either way). I think Michael Easton, James Patrick Stewart, and Kassie Depaiva are all on the cusp between supporting and lead as well.

My final nomination/winning choices as of right now:

    Lead Actor:

    1. Joshua Morrow. Some of his strongest work in years. He deserves it more than anyone else in my opinion.

    2. Roger Howarth. He consistently puts in some amazing work and is pretty overdue for a nomination for GH.

    3. Scott Clifton. His stuff early in the year was great, I’d love to see him nominated. He could pull an upset and win over Joshua Morrow, too.

    4. Chandler Massey. Great work as always.

    5. Eric Martsolf/Don Diamont. This spot is sort of a toss-up, but these two stand out over the rest for me.

    Lead Actress:

    1. Amelia Heinle. Her storyline earlier this year was OUTSTANDING. I think MW would win under the one-episode system from a few years ago, but with a 20 min reel from multiple episodes….Heinle will pull through.

    2. Maura West. The standalone Ava episode + Griffin/Kiki storylines were great. She’s fantastic and is one of the only things making GH tolerable.

    3. Marci Miller. Great stuff w/ DID; she showed a lot of range and did things we haven’t seen her do before.

    4. Sharon Case. She did amazing work early in the year and I’d love to see her be recognized with a nomination.

    5. Michelle Stafford/Mishael Morgan. I feel like MS might submit in supporting.

Just for fun, people who I really hope DON’T get nominated: Laura Wright, Billy Miller, Billy Flynn, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood… I’m a fan of a few sometimes, but this year they just all felt very annoying to me…there are others who deserve it more imo.

Do people have any strong feelings that any of my placements need to be changed? If so, let me know who you would take out and who you would put in and we can discuss it!

I want to do the Goldies starting at the beginning of January, when 2018 is fresh on our minds. Based on past experiences I have decided to allow 2 weeks for voting in each round. (Everybody pretty much either voted immediately or at the last minute; very few vote in the middle of the voting period).

I’m still questioning Chandler Massey as the fourth lead actor for DAYS. I think right now I’m favoring Galen Gering for the spot, but Chandler also seems on par with Greg Vaughan and Freddie Smith in terms of placement. What do others think?

Anybody else have any strong feelings about category placements? I am aiming at starting the first round of voting in early January 2019.

If there is a general feeling that a change needs to be made to the lead actor and lead actress ballots I will do so (:

With only six more episodes left, at least for Days, less than six I think for the other shows It’s time to bump this back up. Anyone you feel really strongly about that you think isn’t a lead and conversely someone you feel strongly about who belongs in supporting? We have way fewer voters than we used to – maybe less soaps or just very little interest on Gold Derby for daytime soaps?

If 3 people agree to a change I will make it!

I’ve been feeling more and more like Camila Banus should be in lead for DAYS. She was a real focal point in the first third of the year in the story with Eli, Lani and JJ and being framed for Andre’s murder. She was backburnered for a while when Gabi was in prison, but she’s really been driving the story with Chad, Abigail and Stefan for the last few months. Over the year, there probably aren’t many actors on the show who’ve gotten more airtime than she had. Didn’t someone have a source to check people’s episode counts? I be curious to see hers compared to some others. I’d put Banus in lead and bump Mary Beth Evans to supporting.

I think Banus is lead, and I think Michelle Stafford is a lead on GH rather than Kirsten Storms

I have moved Camila Banus up to lead for Days (I moved Mary Beth Evans down to supporting). Do others agree that Stafford is lead and Storms is supporting?

I don’t agree with that assessment. Storms was definitely lead in the first half and Stafford was supporting her performance. Nina hasn’t had her own story until recently with this whole long lost daughter story but it’s not really been front burner.

I personally believe that Storms is lead and Stafford is supporting. I will go with the majority though, either way.
