Michael Fairman posted the above article detailing what each show submitted for drama series. I would say just from reading this, B&B and Y&R submitted the best, but I’ll be curious to see how they play when I watch them again!April 13, 2016 at 8:29 am #1201673999
Thanks, GHFan! I’m looking forward to re-watching these (eventually). Just for easy reference, I’ll post the episode numbers, dates and summaries below.
The Bold and the Beautiful: episodes#7079
& #7080 airdates 5/18 and 5/19/2015, and episodes #7138 & #7139
airdates: 8/10 & 8/11/2015
Unlike the hour soaps, because B&B is only a half hour,
they can submit four episodes for contention which gives them roughly the same
amount of total airtime for judging. For their first submission, B&B
chose the episode where Maya discloses her truth to Rick … that she is
transgender. Waiting for him to walk out on her, he does the opposite and
tells her he loves her. Meanwhile, Bill is ready to make a tabloid
spectacle out of finding out Maya was born a man. In their second
submission, it’s Maya’s wedding day to Rick, and Julius and Maya have it out in
front of the wedding party in what was to be the happiest day of her life, as
Maya’s father refuses to accept Maya for who she is.
Days of our Lives: episodes #12733 airdate:
12/08/2015, and #12712 airdate: 11/5/2015
For their daytime drama submissions, Days of our Lives chose
the episode where after Abigail’s harrowing experience with serial killer Ben,
she is face-to-face with him at the Salem police station in the interrogation
room, desperately trying to find out where he took her newborn son. Ben,
who has been arrested, has clearly had a break from reality at this point.
Abby tells the police the reason Ben killed so many loved ones in Salem.
Meanwhile, Hope has kidnapped Dr. Malcolm in hopes of getting information on
who is responsible for Bo’s capture which led him to his ultimate
death. In the second episode: it’s the Salem bicentennial
celebration at the Martin mansion, and following Aiden and Hope’s
wedding. Caroline is in the hospital pleading with Kayla to realize that
she did receive a call from Bo. Meanwhile, Bo and Steve finally make it
back to Salem, only to find out that Hope just married Aiden. Meanwhile,
as Hope and Aiden spend the night together as newlyweds, and as the
bicentennial celebration fireworks bring everyone closer together, Aiden is
planning on murdering his bride.
General Hospital: episodes #13274 airdate:
4/01/2015, and #13458 airdate: 12/21/2015
For their daytime drama series submissions, General Hospital
went with the black and white, to color 52nd anniversary episode which reveals
the truth of Luke Spencer’s childhood. Luke comes to the long-buried truth that
he is responsible for the deaths of his mother Lena, and his despicable father
Tim Spencer. For their second reel, GH chose the Nutcracker gala drama
which featured several stories including: Nikolas and Jason’s fight in
which Nikolas goes over the balcony, Patrick finally seeing Robin and rescuing
her from Jerry Jaks, Sabrina telling Michael that Carlos is her baby’s father,
and Sam revealing to Jason she broke her engagement off with Patrick, and
Elizabeth realizing she lost the man she loved due to her deception.
The Young and the Restless: episodes #10768 airdate:
10/05/2015, and #10769 airdate: 10/06/2015
In their submission with back-to-back episodes, Y&R
chose the fallout of the Adam reveal with Chelsea telling Billy and Victoria. …
Gabriel Bingham is Adam. Meanwhile, Phyllis is telling Victor and Jack
that Gabriel is Adam, as news spreads in Genoa City that Adam is indeed
alive. However, Jack has known for quite some time! At the
Underground, Sage admits her part in her scheme with Gabriel/Adam cover-up to
Nick. Adam then had a confrontation with Billy, and then Victor shows up and
punches Adam. In the pickup episode: Adam and Victor finally have
their long-awaited moment that has been brewing for over a year. At Delia’s
roadside memorial, Billy talks to his beloved daughter about Adam and that he
swears to make him pay. Victoria arrives and assures Billy there will be
justice.April 13, 2016 at 8:37 am #1201674001
My rankings based on the actual submissions only (in other words, Days was the best show of 2015, but…)
1. The Bold and the Beautiful
They submitted four episodes since it is a half hour show, and their submissions are fantastic! The two part Maya is transgender reveal, and Maya’s wedding. Brilliant soap. A
2. General Hospital
Of course they submitted the black & white (and some color) April 1 anniversary episode, mostly set in 1963, whcih was great, but the 2nd submission was a hodgepodge: Nicholas & Jason’s balcony fight; Patrick rescuing Robin from Jerry Jax; Sabrina tells Michael that Carlos is the baby daddy; Sam tells Jason engagement is off with Patrick; Elizabeth realizes she has lost Jason due to her deceptions. It’s strong but B&B submitted better imo.
3. Days Of Our Lives
They had so much better material (sigh). Ken Corday does not nknow how to submit well imo. At police station, Abigail desperately tries to get Ben to reveal where her newborn baby is; Hope kidnapped Dr. Malcolm (I hated these scenes, just hated them!)
2nd episode was the one with the Salmem bicentenial, Hope marries Aiden, Caroline is n the hospital with Kayla, she leaves and is reunited with Bo. Busy and not their best episode! There were SO many better possible submissions! I honestly don’t see Days winning with these episodes.
4. The Young and the Restless
Two back-to-back episodes about the Adam reveal fallout – Delia’s memorial with Billy sweraing revenge on Adam; Phyllis tells Victor; Victor punches Adam; etc. This is meh to me.
I think it’s B&B vs. GH, and based on the submissions, I am now predicting B&B.April 13, 2016 at 8:44 am #1201674002
My initial feeling is that none of these submissions are terrible and any of them could have a shot. I haven’t seen the Y&R submissions at all yet, but I like the focused approach of submitting two episodes basically revolving around one major event, which has worked for them in the past, and this time it’s something that was a major part of the show’s storylines for the year. GH’s anniversary episode was the most obvious choice any of these shows could have made, but I don’t remember thinking much of that second episode. I remember both the DAYS episode being good, but I don’t know how well they’ll work, especially if they weirdly submitted them in reverse order (Hope seeking revenge for both’s death followed by an episode where Bo is about to ride to her rescue? potentially confusing). Both the B&B pairs of episodes are strong, and they kind of seem like the frontrunner to me right now.April 13, 2016 at 9:41 am #1201674015
Out of curiosity, I took a look back through the show threads to see our reactions when some of these episodes aired. Because I remember there being a good deal of praise around both of B&B’s pairs of episodes and GH’s anniversary episode, I didn’t look at those. The only comments we made on GH’s second episode were that we liked Drunk Liz and the event looked boring, nothing about any of the other stuff happening there. The DAYS episodes were both a mixed bag with some of us liking some elements and not others. I didn’t realize until I looked back, but the November 5 episode is the one that DAYS treated like the actual anniversary, and I think it played better than the December episode, by which time we’d basically come into the current unpopular story cycle. Also, one of these episode featured all of the new teens — not great. Y&R’s episode didn’t draw much comment, though Freeman said the October 5 episode was better than usual, but not by much.April 13, 2016 at 10:09 am #1201674020
I haven’t seen the YR or Days tapes. Hopefully they’re online somewhere.
Those GH episodes are so well made, but that transgender reveal from BB was among the best TV moments from last year. I literally began watching BB at the right time (a little after Reign’s first appearance). I had never been so engaged with a soap. I even got my family to watch with me.
But, again, I can’t judge until I’ve seen all the other nominees.April 13, 2016 at 1:21 pm #1201674064
Yeah I’d give the slight edge to B&B. That reel is telling a story throughout, whereas GH would have been better served with either the episode where Luke holds the ladies at gun point in Pat’s hospital room and Tracy calls his bluff (Jane Elliott SLEW that.) or the one after that was submitted by Wallace. Pairing with the absolutely stultifying Nutcracker Gala is beyond me. Was that the episode Julian proposed to Alexis? That scene I actually liked. Well that and Drunk Liz. I hope she comes back soon. Drunk Liz rocks.April 13, 2016 at 3:08 pm #1201674082
I wish Days had submitted from earlier in the year – I had a feeling Ken Corday would choose inferior material from late in the year (sigh). I will be SHOCKED if Days wins with these submissions.April 14, 2016 at 7:53 am #1201674206
Just so everyone knows, looks like we will not be getting the episodes for the three big categories. I tweeted the DaytimeEmmys Twitter handle, and they they said that they did not have permission to release full episodes…If I’m not mistaken, haven’t they released full episodes before for those categories??April 14, 2016 at 8:04 am #1201674208
That’s a shame that they won’t be releasing full episode, but I don’t think they’ve made them publicly available in the past either. Back when Goldderby was getting DVD samples for each category, they were giving us full episodes for writing, directing and series, but I don’t recall those ever being posted online. I remember there being a lot of confusion last year over one of GH’s episodes that supposedly included Sabrina delivering Gabriel prematurely and stuff from the Nurses Ball (which were not in the same episode), and I think we never reconciled which episode it actually was. If the episodes had been posted, we would have known for sure.
That said, I wonder if the individual shows would be willing to make the episodes available maybe on their own websites. If these are the best the shows had to offer to 2015, and they were nominated for Emmys for them, it could be savvy to promote that and encourage people to watch them as a way to draw them in.April 14, 2016 at 9:22 am #1201674223
DAYS did not submit their best reels…I doubt they can be competitive with those reels.April 14, 2016 at 12:21 pm #1201674253
The series submissions were released online a couple years ago. That was OLTL’s last eligible year. When GH wasn’t nominated for Drama Series. When YR won for the Delia death episodes. But I think Tom really pushed for that to happen.
