Eileen Davidson has called it quits as Ashley Abbott on Y&R, citing wanting to spend more time with her family. (Win an Emmy and quit your soap, this happens a great deal)…
Stephen Nichols is leaving Days Of Our Lives.
Weirdest casting news: Stacy Haiduk will be playing Kristen DiMera (huh? Why not bring Eileen Davidson back now even if it’s just for a short-term stint?). Ms. Haiduk is a terrific actress but for me Eileen is the only actress who should ever play Kristen (or Susan or any of her other characters).
No dates have been announced yet.June 27, 2018 at 10:04 am #1202574790
I’d gotten rumblings that Stephen Nichols and DAYS had reached a stalemate in contract negotiations and that he hasn’t filmed since like March. Seems like they didn’t want to give him the level of screentime he was looking for and that he feels the fans want to see. Even though I was not all that fond of Steve for a long time, I’ve grown accustomed to his face and would rather keep him around than not. But overall, this news doesn’t bother me.
It’s the other two pieces of news, which I happened across on Daytime Confidential just before bed last night, that are more troubling.
Eileen Davidson leaving Y&R is unfortunate for the show, especially right after Mishael Morgan left. The revolving door of those two leaving and Hunter King returning does not bode well for my prospects on continuing to watch the show much longer, at least not as regularly. But they’ve not written much or well for Ashley really since Mal Young took over, and since he’s HW and EP, it probably doesn’t seem likely to change. Ashley’s just been a supporting character for Jack and Billy right now, which is something of a pattern with the female characters on this show, especially those past their mid-30s. Anywho, I don’t blame her for leaving, especially since, as Daytime Confidential suggested, this has to do with not getting a raise, which she definitely should after winning a second lead actress Emmy. I don’t doubt she wants to spend time with her family, as she said, but given how infrequently she was on screen, it’s not like the show was working her so hard that they were keeping her away. Money was apparently also the issue with Mishael Morgan, as her agent basically said flat out. I wonder how many others this will be an issue for in the coming months. DC also implied that Sony isn’t giving out raises right now, which is maybe part of why DAYS didn’t want to give Stephen Nichols a higher episode guarantee.
Most weird, though, is that Stacy Haiduk is now at DAYS playing at least one of Eileen Davidson’s former characters. I didn’t read which character(s) she’d be playing, and I don’t really feel okay about any of them, but I’d feel the least okay about Kristen. I think Stacy Haiduk is great, but there’s really no replacing Davidson in any of these roles. In just the last year, the audience has seen Davidson as Susan, Mary Moira, and Kristen. If this had happened before Davidson’s return in 2012, I’d be much more into it, but I can’t even say I’ll be giving Haiduk a fair chance, despite the word from the insider in the DC article that she’s “killing it.” I understand that Haiduk’s been filming already, and this news about Davidson leaving Y&R is just breaking, and obviously there’s no guarantee that Davidson wants to come back to DAYS at all. But the combination of recasting a role or roles that were played so iconically and were on screen just eight months ago and the actress who played those roles now becoming available just feels really not good.June 27, 2018 at 11:41 am #1202574864
Absolutely NO WAY would I ever be ok with someone other than Eileen Davidson playing Kristen and all her other characters. I think I may stop watching in protest. It’s like getting someone else to play Marlena or Erica Kane. This is BANANAS.June 27, 2018 at 1:12 pm #1202574963
Wow! Just when I thought it was a quiet news week.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I just posted a few days ago that I do not like recasts. Generally speaking, I feel that it’s better to move on to new characters and new stories. Stacey Haiduk is a strong actress, and I do not doubt that she is doing a good job. But I simply do not see the point of bringing back Kristen, Susan, or any of the other characters if Eileen Davidson is not available. The fact that she evidently is now available is essentially salt in the proverbial wound.
As for Davidson leaving Y&R, that is unfortunate. However, her stories on Y&R have not been very good for a long time, even before Mal Young started writing. Whether it is the money, the writing, or simply burnout, I wish her well. Given the fact that Dina is ill, it seems like an odd time for Ashley to leave, but perhaps the writers will find a way to make that the impetus for her departure.
Over at Days, the show is somewhat overloaded with cast members. Stephen Nichols is very good, but his story is moving very slowly. I wonder how the writers will script his exit if Mary Beth Evans chooses to stay.June 27, 2018 at 4:56 pm #1202575098
Absolutely WRONG!!! There could be no other Kristen than Eileen Davidson. All I can hope for is that Stacey Haiduk only lasts for a couple episodes, like the last time she was on the show before being replaced.June 27, 2018 at 6:38 pm #1202575132
I have a feeling this is going to blow up big time in their faces. Like I said, I am planning on boycotting the show if someone other than Eileen plays Kristen.June 27, 2018 at 8:37 pm #1202575191
I just read that Linsey Godfrey will be joining the cast of Days Of Our Lives – I don’t know what role she will play or if it is long-term or short-term.
So many changes. My thinking is the no raises has to do with the low ratings of soaps? I think this is why so many are not renewing their contracts?June 28, 2018 at 9:53 am #1202575593
I had forgotten Stacy Haiduk had played that crazy prison warden for like two days!
I really hope DAYS gets the message and corrects this Stacy Haiduk situation as quickly as possible. Does anyone think this is a good idea? If money is the big issue with a lot of these recent departures, as seems to be the case, I’d suggest both DAYS and Y&R more proactively trim their casts so they are prioritizing the people they really don’t want to lose. I suppose that may also be part of the problem if the shows are prioritizing the wrong people.June 28, 2018 at 10:10 am #1202575619
Didn’t someone else play Susan temporarily back in 2011?June 28, 2018 at 10:18 am #1202575626

I was thinking the same thing. Just cut half the cast and give Eileen a pay bump with the money they save. It’s crazy to me that the powers-that-be think bringing in another actress to fill an iconic role is a good idea. Are they really that out of touch with the viewers??June 28, 2018 at 10:33 am #1202575641
I can’t say I’m too sad about Nichols departure. I know Patch is his most famous role, but I’ve always preferred his work as Stefan on GH. I’d love him to reprise that role since there’s a new focus on Cassadine intrigue with Alexis’ current story.
Same goes for Davidson. She’s played Ashley much longer, but I definitely prefer her work as Kristen, Susan, et al. My thinking is Haiduk is a permanent recast. If Ron wanted to bring back Davidson’s characters short-term again, I’m sure SONY could have coordinated it so that Davidson could be on Y&R and DAYS at the same time like last year. This just sounds like a horrible idea. I’m sure Haiduk is a fine actress, but there’s no way she can come close to what Davidson does with these complex roles. I’d rather DAYS do what GH does with Robin and Brenda: have the characters off canvas and only air when the original, fan-favorite actress is available for a return guest spot.
Now if Kristen, Sami and Nicole will all be back on DAYS later this year, are they finally gonna reveal/confirm that EJ is alive and well?

I have been wondering how any decision was made to bring Haiduk in as any of Davidson’s former characters. I agree that Sony would probably have been happy to make Eileen available schedule-wise to be able to do both, but would they have been willing to pay her for it, or pay her what she deserved, at least? It would be insane if DAYS didn’t even approach Davidson about coming back on to play whatever role or roles they’d like. She’s said in the past that she can do both shows simultaneously, so even being on contract with Y&R wouldn’t necessarily preclude her from being on DAYS on a regular basis. I wonder if this led into a bigger issue that ultimately made Davidson realize she doesn’t want to be at Y&R (or at either show) right now. It’s possible I guess that DAYS wants several of these roles on at once, though there’s really no current storyline reason that would need to be the case.
Failing to get Davidson back, any plans for Kristen, Susan, or whoever should have been abandoned. This feels like something a writer would want to do and an EP would veto. I can understand the writing team saying they want Kristen/Susan/whoever back on and let casting figure it out. But then I would expect Greg Meng or Ken Corday or whoever to take a hard line that recasting those roles was not happening. Yes, Brynn Thayer did very briefly play a barely-glimpsed Susan back in 2011, before Eileen’s return and at a time when it seemed like she’d never come back, and even that felt very, very off, and it was just essentially Susan making a phone call.
The bottom line for me is this recast should not be happening and I feel like I need someone to blame.June 30, 2018 at 9:04 am #1202577136
Honestly, I feel like this is going to be the beginning of the end for the soaps. I was reading an article about no pay raises and many people leaving and it just seems the networks want a reason to cancel the soaps.July 1, 2018 at 6:19 pm #1202577748
Aww, cheer up Djoko. I don’t think this will cause the end of soaps. It’s difficult to say goodbye to our favorites, but there are always plenty of unemployed actors waiting in the wings. As long as the writing is good, I think the remaining soaps can survive. Then again, the writing for two of the four soaps is somewhat lacking at the moment. But the bigger threat to soaps is the proliferation of cable channels, internet options, and other societal shifts away from daytime television viewing.July 2, 2018 at 9:17 am #1202577974
I was under the impression that Sony was restricting raises, but didn’t think the networks were behind that. I’m still optimistic about the soaps we have continuing for years to come.
Interestingly, Soap Opera Digest seems to be ignoring the Stacy Haiduk thing entirely. I haven’t seen them report on it at all or mention it in their reporting on Eileen Davidson leaving Y&R, and on this week’s podcast, they discussed Eileen leaving Y&R and how it would be fun to see her back at DAYS, again without mentioning the story about Haiduk now being there, even though those news items broke within like an hour of one another. It makes me wonder how reliable the source is on the Haiduk thing and maybe there’s some misinformation or misunderstanding about it.
