Hooray! Executive producer and headwriter Mal Young will end his reign of error at The Young and the Restless. This is really good news! Although I enjoyed some of the storylines during his time on the show early on he mostly was destroying the show with one terrible decision after another. I believe it was a huge mistake to have the same person in both roles, just way too much power. Here’s hoping they get back to what makes Y&R a legendary soap: strong core families, long-term characters and actors we are invested in, and classy soap stories delivered with excellent production values.

Interesting. And I’ve just read that Anthony Morina and Josh Griffith have been named Executive Producer and Head Writer, respectively.

I totally agree that having one EP/HW is a mistake that Y&R seems to enjoy making. It’s great when the two positions can work well together, but the jobs are different and should be performed separately.

I wonder if Morina/Griffith are just a stop gap until the positions are more permanently filled or if they’re intended for the long haul? Griffith is a headwriter whose work I have not really enjoyed on both Y&R and DAYS. Hopefully this time will be better.

It’s also interesting that the Showbiz411 article discussing Mal Young’s departure asserts that Young should not be getting the lion’s share of the blame for the problems at Y&R, that much was dictated from above and the real problem lies with CBS head of daytime Angelica McDaniel, who is still in place. Additionally, I know a lot of blame for casting issues were put on Sony and its refusal to give certain actors raises. One has to wonder how much stock to put in any of this, but a change in EP and HW at least presents the possibility of a much-needed change at the show.

I figured it was going to happen. It’s now a revolving door that has been going on for several years.
